Ahhh Jerome, it's too hot and muggy for bourbon, having some Magic Hat #9 till I mix up some Bombay Sapphire martinis later.

That Balblair is a scotch, not a bourbon.

What can I say?  You got me going on whisky and I got you going on martinis.

And we're both the better for it.

Now I have to go find my copy of Dexter Gordon's 'Tangerine' and sit out on deck with music and 'tini's.

Killing off a bottle of Glenlivet Nadurra 16 Year Old, batch 0410J.  Nadurra is the scotch whisky I would recommend to the first-time single malt drinker.  It isn't chill filtered, it's matured in first fill American oak, it's bottled at cask strength, it's very affordable at less than $70 for a bottle (I paid $62 for this one), and lastly it is damned fine whisky.

Mmmmm... sounds good.
Still above my pay grade though. Between Makers Mark and Buffalo Trace, that's keeping me happy and keeping some money in my wallet.
My wife wouldn't be fond of my new hobby of drinking expensive(r) Whiskey/Whisky.  :nono:

There's nothing at all wrong with Maker's Mark or Buffalo Trace.  Single malt scotch is considerably more expensive by comparison.  If you're looking for a good budget single malt then I would recommend either Old Pulteney 12 Year Old or Tomatin 12 Year Old.  Both are bottled at 43% ABV, are chill filtered, and have E150a caramel coloring added.  But they are still very nice malts and I drink them both regularly.  They run between $30 and $40 for a bottle.  I bought a bottle of Tomatin 12 Year Old a few days ago for $32.  I don't think you will find a more affordable single malt.

For inexpensive bourbon I like Elijah Craig 12 Year Old for about $25, Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel for about $30, or Four Roses Small Batch for about the same price.

Now there's some very good information.   :thumb:

From a fellow with taste buds more sophisticated that mine, I respect your thoughts and recommendations.
I think I'll save the link to your post and purchase some of the products you mentioned.
It'll be a bit, as I bought a nice (very large) bottle of Buffalo Trace on the way home tonight.

Thank you Jerome.   :D

And at 108.6 proof carries a fair punch too. One of my favorites, as well as the Macallan Cask Strength.   :thumb:

Currently sipping some

Addendum - Can recommend Aberlour for a decent 'inexpensive' single malt. Runs about $44 here with the ridiculous $3 state liter charge, & 20% state sales tax.

+1 on the Elijah Craig Jerome.

Gin and tonic while I had planned to listen to classical and re-file the jazz albums scattered hither and yon. Well, you know how that worked out, 1 classical and then every other jazz album I put away I had to listen to.

The Bombay Sapphire makes a great gin and tonic, especially in this heat and humidity.

Maybe classical tomorrow.

I generally prefer Bombay Sapphire for a martini, but there are times when I would rather use a gin with a slightly less aggressive, somewhat softer profile.  Plymouth English Gin is perfect for those times.

Martinis should have one or three olives...

One martini variation I've been liking is to substitute St Germain for vermouth, with a twist. It helps to use a gin with a decent amount of anise as a contrast to the elderflower, best I've used so far is Spirit Hound gin, which is made in Lyons, CO... about 20 miles from my place.

We have a micro-distilling revolution going on in the CO front range, lots of new distilleries going up...
