BDP-1 MPD service
« on: 7 Dec 2012, 06:43 am »
My BDP-1 constantly displays "Not connected" in Gnome (my Win 7 desktop player), MPod (on my iPhone) and MPad (on my iPad). This happened suddenly (used to work perfectly) and as far as I know I didn't change anything. It's obvious the MPD service isn't working, because "Playlist" (which should be built-in to the BDP-1) shows nothing. My music lives on an NAS, of course that can't connect either.

When I go to"Settings" on the Home page (I use "http://bryston-bdp-1.local", but the page comes up OK and it's no different if I input the IP address), the round button against "MPD" service is greyed out and it won't let me start it.

Any ideas why?

I had similar issue, nor being able to access BDP by tablet or from PC, I restarted the router and worked fine after
The page displayed by Chrome (in my case) was from cache and not from BDP itself

I've experienced issues playing ALAC files that would crash the MPD service on certain songs and it was easily repeatable.   I haven't had that issue with AIFF or FLAC.

No, I use FLAC files. Anyway, as I said, my music is on a NAS and the problem seems to be internal to the BDP-1.
I did reboot my router (and the modem - I use separate ones), as suggested in an earlier reply, but it made no difference, I still can't start the MDP service (and it's not cached in my browser).

I am stumped.

Hi,

have you tried dis- and enabling MPD in Settings/services? While your at that, you might try the same with Samba to make the BDP1 visible again on your network.

Guess I wasn't clear - Settings/services MPD is grey (i.e. not active) and I cannot start it. I *can* stop/start the Samba service but it makes no difference to MPD and my problem is *not* visibility on the network - I can access "bryston-bdp-1.local" no problem and the BDP1 shows up in Windows Explorer (Network).

Explorer has a messy screen, but it always worked for me in the past.

And what about the BDP1 itself, which seems non-functional? A clue may be what I've seen sometimes after turning on or rebooting my BDP1: The DHCP IP address has "BDP1_Poll" or something similar next to it (and no, it doesn't catalog my music and disappear). Does that ring any bells?

Also both mPod and mPad tell me my BDP1 is not connected, but I'll try Chrome just on the offchance (at this stage I'll try anything).

I just realized you were referring to Internet Explorer (so was I, when I said it was messy but it used to work) - in my original post I meant *Windows Explorer* which is *not* the same (Mac equivalent would be Finder). I meant I could see the BDP1 on my network in Windows Explorer.

This has happens to me occasionally only to discover the IP address has changed. Check the BDP for IP address and then check your settings to see if they are the same. If not, updare the IP address.

No jjc1, thanks, the IP address is correct (first thing I checked).

Yes, James maybe I have a hardware fault (see also my comments in the BDP1 Software forum).

Hi Paul,

Have you tried unplugging the powercable? There are situations even a  reboot or factory reset won't help, but unplugging the power does.

Cheers,
Marius

If that wont do it, this is definitely a 'Chris-question'.....

Hi Paul,

Have you checked mpd's log?  It may provide a clue as to why it isn't starting.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Marius,

Tried uplugging the cable, thanks but still no joy. As you said, it was a "Chris-question".

Chris rang me, spent a few minutes with a screen sharing programme and a nifty command-line utility, and I now have a working BDP-1! (I am on Windows 7, too).

Must admit I was sceptical (thought I had a hardware fault or Chris was a Mac guru with little knowledge of Windows) but he's obviously a wizard with any o/s. No idea what he did but my MPD's come back, that's all I care about (he helped me update to the latest firmware and recover my album art in MPad/Mpod, too).

By an unfortunate coincidence I had router trouble (DHCP etc) at about the time I lost my BDP-1, completely unrelated (I think, although I suppose it may have triggered the BDP-1 problem). So, that had me looking in the wrong direction.

Hooray!

Paul

I posted this in the SOFTWARE FORUM but didn't get any reply's so I'll try here.

I downloaded the latest software and now I can't load any playlist and when I do get it to play it only plays a couple of songs and then freezes up. I lose my IP address. I get my IP address back if I unplug either the BDP or the router. And I can't get into the settings on Bryston homepage. I get this message.

"Internal Server Error

Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) PHP/5.3.3-7+squeeze14 with Suhosin-Patch Server at 192.168.0.102 Port 80"

I also use Gnome and I'm getting this message when I go to the PLAYLIST EDITOR

"Playlist support in MPD is not working. See manual for possible fixes. Playlist Editor is now disabled."

Any ideas?

Hi Chris. This problem started when I downloaded the file James sent me Monday..... 20121210.bin. Prior to that everything was good.
