I know there are discs that help one calibrate their tv. There is also the Spyder calibration gadget but it's not cheap. My guess is you got yourself as far as you can go without accessing the special calibration settings. All I can suggest to you know is grab your wife and rent the new Batman flick on blu-ray.

I'm replaying Avengers with the new settings while my rental is still good (Vudu HD streaming), and the image is excellent. The settings did work well on this set. Both Samsung plasma's so they were in the ballpark.

Not married yet, thank goodness. A wife would have lost her mind by now. Magnestands several months ago now, Epik Legend, Ncores, now a big screen... and more to come

WARNING:- Any unauthorized access into the Service Manual of a new TV (still under its manufacturer's warranty) will wave its warranty. So if you want to use a cheapie calibration DVD to carry out any video calibration on a new TV, you will do so at yr own risk of losing the TV's 1st year warranty.

Besides, those cheapie calibration DVD is only designed to check out a few specs for only one I/P of the TV & depends on how good would be the DVD player being used.

If the TV is an expensive one, better to ensure such calibration be done precisely. Why not call in a professional ISF licensed specialist who uses ISF certified software & hardware, including a calibration test signals generator instead of a so-called calibration disc played on a consumer grade cheapie DVD player.

No free lunch, my friend.

What the hell, I put it nearfield between my speakers where the old 25" was. 6 feet away. Totally decadent now. I like this better. Might keep it this way. Plus now it's placed between the nulls of my planars.

The truth is I was engaged to be married. She hated the little stereo I had then. ERC-1 and a multimedia set on stands. After we broke up I started going to town. "Our" room looks much, much different now.

When I got our Panny 42 plasma a few years ago, I did some research on the net and found that folks with the same unit had a custom (ie not inside the service calibration settings) setting that they all liked.

After the break in, I put the 42 on that and have been happy since.

Reminds me I should do the same for our new 55! It has been in the house for a couple of months now.

Do it, it's worth it. I went back to factory settings for a bit and while the factory is good for starting, this is better.

And thanks again, TF, I now have it running a PS3 game using the game mode settings that guy made. Whoever he is, his settings were very specific and thought out. It looks very, very, very good.

My LCD used to screen tear ocassionally and stutter a bit (and it was a $400 25", so it wasn't bottom end), but this just FLIES.

The most visually stunning movie I have ever seen ("eye candy") is Avatar on Bluray.
Do yourself a favor, and buy this one. It's the one you'll use as the "demo disc" when your friends come over.

Congrats on your new Plasma. I'm the same way when it comes to video. I'll spend much more on audio without blinking an eye.

I'll second the suggestion to search the threads over on AVS forums for calibration settings for your particular set model. A few ISF technicians contribute to these threads regularly & while trying others settings for the set you have is'nt equivalent to an actual ISF calibration it may bring
you to a very respectable picture quality sooner than you might think. I have 2 or 3 HD calibration discs (1 on HD-DVD & 2 on Bluray) that brought me to about the same PQ as the settings I found in the threads about my Sony XBR6. (I'm guessing more than a few of these posters settled on their setting after using these same discs). In all truthfulness your plasma has to burn in a few hundred hours before you should consider an actual ISF calibration. (In the meantime you can be spending your money on something more important... Audio Equipment)

@ Bob, I'm a PS+ member, so I have an S-ton of games on there. Right now I'm playing Doom III BFG edition, and it looks freaking awesome, actually I'm playing through Doom II right now on UltraViolence, and it's awesome. I did put in some newer stuff in there and it is just off the chain.. Plasma is so awesome for gaming.

@ Steve, a couple hundred hours, really? I'll keep that in mind. And yeah, it's funny, I just spent a good amount on my Ncores with custom faceplates a few weeks ago, and I couldn't give my money away fast enough for those, but for this much less expensive tv, even though I had staked it out for a while, when it came time to buy, I was sweatin'

Why is that? I could have three of these tv's with a few hundred left over compared to what I spent on my amps. And my speakers, mods and all, were over 3K.

Vudu is the way to go, brother...if you have the internet speed to accommodate it, the HDX 1080p feed from Vudu is just stunning. I rent the majority of my movies from Vudu and I love that Walmart is their parent company now. This service will only get better, and it'll be around for a long time.

By the way, another movie you may want to check out on that beautiful new plasma is "Open Range". It's a good solid western with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, but the cinematography will blow your mind. It's one of my favorite demos. Also, if you want to see what your set is capable of in terms of vibrant colors, check out "What Dreams May Come". Not only a wonderful film, IMO, but it's visually captivating.

Vudu is the s***. It's almost as good as having the BluRay, which is quite something, and eventually it will be. Blu Ray 4K will be the next step, I'm sure. When BluRay first came out they hinted at much, much larger capacities.

And I loooove Open Range. I love everything about it. Forget that it's a great Western, it's just a great movie that everyone should watch. Everything is shot to look and sound as perfect as it could for that scene.

The bar scene * is a subwoofer fidelity test as well.

I have my plasma burning in on a constant stream from Netflix, I'm not even in the room with it. But I have gone in and watched some stuff and I must say again I am thoroughly happy with it and for the performance I'm getting I would have paid a lot more. It's quite a nice screen.

Unfortunately he's east coast.

I gotta say again though, the settings I was given in that link are really damn good. Anyone with a current Samsung Plasma should try them.

One of the neat things about this latest gen of plasma screen, this thing is slim not a whole lot thicker than my planars. Even my 4 year old LCD is much chunkier front to back.
