Plan on doing this build.

A couple questions:

The Dayton woofer has an fs of 50.5 fs vs mid 40s mentioned early in this posting. Has something changed?  Should I be looking at a different driver?

The specified 1.4 mh inductor is currently not available from Psrts Express.  Can I substitute a 1.5 mh inductor with minimal impact?

Hey Bill,

With a baffle this size, 10 Hz on the woofers low end will make little difference. Aside from listening in the near field, cancellation will set in before you would likely detect a difference. Yes, I would suggest opting for an inductor one size larger (not smaller) if you have to make a crossover swap. 1.5 mH should be fine. Have fun!

I just re-read this entire thread for the upteenth time over the last several years and one question still pops up in my head...

What if you had doubled your budget for this build?

I built mine without the woofer with the same baffle width and mid and tweet location and used the Golden Ratio for the height.  Using them near field with a Nelson Pass ACA amp kit and they sound wonderful.  I too wonder if using more esoteric drivers would increase the pleasure ( or just drain the wallet)?  After some thought, I do not think more expensive drivers would be a wise investment with this design.  it is very darn good just the way it is.  Using an 8" Yamaha NS-SW050 subwoofer and it works very well.

Hi, I think this thread is still basically alive

I’m Jessica from the UK and very interested in playing with this OB design.
I thought I had sourced all the drivers but the supplier of the MCM has let me down. My question is then anyone know of another driver that can be used instead and more internationally available.

Looks like i have finally found the MCM 55-2981 in the UK. Farnell have them as their Multicomp Pro 55-2981. and at £88 the pair inc tax and delivery they are a great price.

Will certainly show the results when they are built. I have been busy sourcing the parts and  designing things like the active filter for the sub as I intend to use it to drive a mono 300W class D amp. I have parts for that too. Bit of a delay on the xover as the inductors are wound on demand and will take 3 weeks. And finally I have to design a cost effective +/- 65V linear PSU to drive the class D. This is meant to be a vacation lol

All the woodwork will be done by my friend Jules, my partner in this endeavour. I am useless at woodwork but I will be moving soon and then I will be able to do the baffles on my large CNC machine. I can push buttons lol

Sorry I took a while to respond.  Looks like you were able to find the MCM drivers. A similar option (low cost and similar TS params) might be the GRS 10PT-8 10" Paper Cone Professional Woofer.  Like the MCM, its also marketed as a pro sound woofer and has a high-ish efficiency that should work with the other drivers in the project. It is currently being sold in the US for around $27 at Parts Express.  Good luck and hope this helps!
