My HW-19 VPI
« on: 17 Jan 2021, 12:12 am »
Finally getting ready to finish it, thought I'd start a thread.

I bought this 10 years ago form the late John Evanthes TheChairGuy. Was a stock HW-19 Mk III. Gradually changed things out, dustcover, Super Platter, JMW 10.5 tonearm with adjustable base, SDS, SAMA, periphery ring, counterweight, CounterIntuitive, Sound Smith Zephyr. But I never dialed it in fully. I did not like the oak base, everything in my system is black, so I bought a donor table HW-19 Jr. I hope to post progress from time to time, chime in if you have suggestions!

Thanks, but it's weird. I feel like I never fully set it up. Like all the parts are there but not working in harmony. So....I hope to be posting some updates.

Funny, I love the oak base so much that I specifically waited until one came up for sale.  Biggest mistake ever to sell that table.

The "donor" HW19 Jr is so nice I decided to set it up in my mad scientist audio workroom. I have transferred it to the oak base and the black base from the Jr will go to the big rig HW19 soon. It came with a VPI version Dynavector DV20X2 that had a lot of hours; I sent that cartridge to SoundSmith for retipping. I bought a few AT440MLa a few years back on the advice of Wayner so I installed one and it sounds pretty darn good already.

Nice rig, Paul!

This one’s an early 90s HW-19 Jr. that was upgraded all the way to a Mk IV TNT. (sans oak color base!) Did not go to the newer platter sized to work with the outer clamp ring. Instead, machined up some parts to adapt the old platter. (see links below, along with other hot-rodding mods) Happened to grow up a mere 10 miles from VPI HQ. Love ‘em!

Tonearm mods for low frequency tracking: (the reasons to do this, discussions of principles, calculations and tests showing its performance are scattered up and down through this discussion thread)

My Super Platter compromise. I used a Super Board, the 2" platter needed a higher mount for the tonearm. BUT the platter would not clear the inner edge of the board. So I used a router to cut a channel in the board.

Finished product looks better with the platter hiding some of the imperfections.
