I'm not an engineer (though I work with hundreds of them), but it seems to me that you diagrams are correct so long as your top priority is keeping the back of the shelves on the wall.  I just think the LPs will want to another direction.  Down and to the right, because THEIR pivot point is at the wall in each tier.

Yeah. And each tier will weigh a fraction of the whole. The shelf itself will be glued and screwed 3/4" birch ply. It will take that weight easy. I mean if we can load up ikea boxes...

Why not place a strip of 1 inch thick plexiglass along the bottom edge?  You get the illusion of a floating shelf but the plexi will hold up the load.  You can even mount it slightly inward so light won't reflect on the surface ruining the effect OR you can use frosted plexi with an LED strip behind it for a super cool lighting effect.  I would go with the latter.  LEDs can be any color, from bright white to warm incandescent to blue, red or whatever you can imagine.

Ahhh, I didn't catch that part!  Crap, that's gonna be heavy on its own.    :D

yup. but even if the entire structure weighs 2,000 lbs. thats still only 285 lbs per stud -- 13% of it's loading capacity.

Placing legs on it only distributes very little. The joists carry the load to the far side of the room to the next bearing wall 14' away -- so less than 5% of the LPs weigh is actually distributed downward.

But you're right, it would be fine all in 1/2" ply. Glued and screwed.

Just make sure you put the expensive records on the top so the less expensive records will cushion the blow when the whole thing collapses.

That's a good idea, but unnecessary with the concrete floor in your bomb shelter.  I'm looking for a new a Rachael rich beauty babe to wait out the radiation with.  Currently giving applications.
It's interesting that they came out with a new assessment of waiting time.  Says they wer wrong about how long before it's safe to come out.  Fritag?
Don't know why I thought of WWII.  I look more like HO Chi Minh and Rambo is cooler than Bruce Willis who is a lot funnier.  I like the one where he came out to City Hall in the past and there was a lion hanging out.  To top it off Tim Allen stole the beryllium sphere thing from AT.  Small world?

Those records are heavy.  1 large plastic milk crate weighs around 45lbs?  Good for working out - keep in shape.  Get one of those lifting belts the loading dock dudes wear.  Makes the gals look extra sharp too, like a girdle.  Who do you think was prettier Grace Kelly or Ingrid Bergman?  To get a good estimate buy a bathroom scale and weigh yourself.  Then weigh yourself with x + r.  Then subtract x and you've....  I forgot what I was going to say.  Here's where I'd like to honeymoon:
