New Oreleans swing jazz gets well represented with Kermit Ruffins. The only album of Kermit that I have is a compilation album called Putumayo Presents: Kermit Ruffins (2005).  Satchmo would be proud.  8)

Some great trumpeters that I didn't remember seeing mentioned so far are Booker Little, Joe Gordon, Fats Navarro, Donald Byrd, Greg Gisbert, Bill Mobley, Bill Hardman, Valery Pornomorov, Conte Condoli, Stu Williamson, Bud Brisbois, Leon Merian, Red Rodney, Tim Hagans, Jim Rotondi.

There are so many. It takes a tremendous commitment to master it at that level, and the demand for jazz stars is down. So I don't think we'll ever see another extreme master like Kenny Dorham, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan or Freddie Hubbard. Pops is tops, the greatest jazz trumpeter and most influential popular musician of all time.

Yeah, Booker is incredible on Dolphy's two live recording at The Five Spot.  Hannible Marvin Peterson will tear your heart out with his playing on Zee Zee from Gil Evan's Svengali album on Atlantic.

(Why don't psychiatrists live more than two years on the street?)

Always like Woody Shaw, as much for his playing as for his band's music.
Hi,
You mean say the spelling of this phrase is wrong??  I will change it for a more clear reading.
Thanks, Gustavo

Gee, how could we leave out Donald Byrd and Fats? Guys like Nat Adderly could play too.

I think we'll continue to see the emergence of great jazz players on all instruments, despite the declining demand. At one time jazz/swing was the popular music. In the '40s there was no rock n roll. Pop/rock and country have been #1 ever since, but jazz survived despite some really lean yrs, like in the hippie times. If somebody has the talent and desire to play, there are those, like us, who will listen. I don't listen much to the simplistic sing-songy crap that masquerades as music these days. Everybody seems to copy each other and that's all they got. Most pop/rock bands have one decent album in them, then forget it, they're played out. They rehash the same thing over and over. Most of it is for kids - children's music. That's fine and dandy but there are many of us who dig the real-deal. I think our numbers are increasing. Maybe it's the aging population, but pop/rock gets pretty boring and many need something more interesting than the key of C and 1 or 2 chords per tune. Once you start relating to jazz.....

I don't want to lower the bar, but just to put things in perspective I would be thrilled if I could make it as far as getting one song played on the radio. The best I have ever done is play at a guy's 4Oth birthday bash.  :guitar: :drums:  :guitar:

And for free!  :D

Nicholas Payton, son of football icon Walter Payton, needs to be mentioned. I have quite a few of his albums, From This Moment (1994), Nick@Nite(1999), Dear Louis (2001), and my favorite album Sonic Trance (2003) where he totally fusions his horn out.  8)   Good stuff.

Cheers,
Robin

Walter Payton the football great is not Nicholas Payton's father.  Nicholas's father was a musician.

Neil Hefti the composer - played trumpet.
I think we might have left out Red Rodney, Blue Mitchell, Ira Sullivan, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew and Howard McGhee. And historical figures like Nick LaRocca, Muggsy Spanier and Clyde McCoy. How about the guys who played in big bands like Bix Biderbeck or Cat Anderson. Lots of great players over the years. BTW, that video of Maynard-Al Hurt was amazing, w/Herbie and Ron Carter?

I found this on John Swana. Looks like a promo for Criss Cross:

Give my second vote for Bobby Shew.
Till Bronner is also a current great player.

Wow, I can't believe I missed this thread. :duh:

First, I want to ++ Sean Jones not only because he is very talented, but also because he resides in Pittsburgh when he isn't touring.  I meet him about nine years ago (when he was ~ 20 years old) while he played in this little bar.  He showed his potential for greatness then and continues to demonstrate it now.  Sean teaches at a local University and provides mentoring to local young talent.   I get to see him play about a dozen times a year.

I want to add these names to the growing list of fantastic horn players -
Lew Soloff
Avishai Cohen
Jon Faddis
Laurie Frink
Paolo Fresu

There are many others, but I can't recall them at this time.  I'll be back...

Happy listening,
Louj

Hey guys, how can you top Miles? Also great for jazz, Louis Armstrong.
Of the current bunch, I'd have to go with Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard and Chuck Mangoine,

I think I read somewhere that Ornette played trumpet. Wonder if he had a plastic trumpet?  :D

As I go through my records I keep coming up with more trumpet players. There were so many. How about Johnny Coles? Anybody mention Blue Mitchell?

I saw Tom Harrell at the Blue Note once. It must have been 20+ yrs ago. He was great. The one thing I really remember is his ability to concentrate and just nail it. He was on some kind of medication and it affected his concentration. When he wasn't playing he just sat there staring straight ahead. Time to play, and he got up and played like an angel. It was just so amazing to see.

I second Terrence Blanchard....he's killer. Irvin Mayfield (from Nola as well) is killer. He's got chops extraordinaire, and makes his horn dance all over the place like Wynton, and with tremendous soul and character. And Jeremy Pelt is another young player to take a listen to. Avishai Cohen as well....heard him live in NYC a few years ago.

Just heard Bob Bryant playing on Lockjaw Davis' "Trane Whistle".

He solos on the tune 'The Stolen Moment', see if you can find at least this song online. I first heard it on Pandora, and bought the album as a result.
