:shh:  Please don't mention Patricia Barber around here.  :nono:

Bob

Sorry for the faux pas Bob, but why is she off limits? I don't like all her work by any stretch, but on material like Ode to Billy Joe, Touch of Honey, etc she sounds great, and her engineers always do a terrific job in my humble opinion.... If it truly is a no-no to discuss, just PM me.

I REALLY like Patricia Barber, too.   Hang in there, don't take guff from nobody! :D

Sam, good call on Inara George.  Great genes!!  Her dad is one of my all-time top 5 singer/songwriters...and a mean slide guitar!

And Katie Melua...well, I just like to look at her.  I don't really care what she sounds like.

Great thread, I'd forgotten about it. Thanks for the bump.  :thumb:
So many great gals I've not listened to in so long.

Not sure if I could give a top five, but the stand outs in my mind presently are:

- Holly Cole
- Eva Cassidy
- Susan Tedeschi
- Jennifer Warnes
- Linda Ronstadt  (with Nelson Riddle)[sp?]

Strangely enough, before I clicked the [post] button, I went back through the thread, My list hasn't changed much form my post two years ago, back on page two. Seems I need to expand my female musical horizons.

The only new gal is Jacqui Naylor.

Bob

p.s. Although I did go through an "Evanescence" phase. She's got a neat voice. Can't recall her name, Amy something?

Offered for your consideration : Betty LaVette
                                           Ruthie Foster
Johnette Napolitano ( Concrete Blonde, Pretty & Twisted )
                                           Mavis Staples
Rosie Gaines ( Prince & The New Power Generation )

Perhaps not the best from a technical standpoint, but the soul and lived-in quality of these voices keeps me comin' back for more. As Johnette sings in a song from the first Concrete Blonde album " If I had the choice I'd keep the voice I've got 'cause it was hard to find..."
