slinco-  my, you have an eclectic bunch a singers there.  Marta Topferova, Rosemary Clooney, Blossom Dearie, Michelle Shocked.  No shortage of female vocalists around your house.  And I see Ani Difranco showing up here.  That's a lady with a lot of feeling and expression to her voice.  Yeah, and Ann Wilson can carry a tune and rock the hell out of it, etc, etc.  Good stuff.

Hey Imperial, how about another Norwegian with a great voice - Sinikka Langeland. She also plays the kantele spectacularly well. Her CD Starflowers (ECM) was my favorite release of 2007.

Recently:
- Holly Cole
- Hope Waits
- Robin McKelle

In the recent past:
- Sara McLaughlin
- Linda Ronstadt (with Nelson Riddle)
- Leanne Rimes
- Diana Krall
- Natalie Merchant
- Norah Jones
- Mariah Carey

I've been thinking about getting some:
- Shelby Lynne
- Jennifer Warnes

By the sounds of it I should be getting some:
- Ella Fitzgerald

And from what you guys are saying, I should re-listen to my CDs of:
- Aimee Mann

There are soooo many good sounding female vocalists on various compilation/demo discs I have, but I wonder if this 'snippet' of their voice is indicative of the rest of their music.
........as money allows.

Bob

EDIT; Forgot Robin McKelle

Different strokes....  but I couldn't help but throw up in my mouth a little bit when I read through this list.  I am sure others will hate some of my "favorites", although, this is off the hip.  Its also not a category I really get into.

Ann Wilson
Stevie Nicks
Emmylou Harris
Neko Case (sometimes)

Love the thread--while not necessarily in my top five, I was struck by the absence of some of the folk singers: kate wolf, joan baez, mary chapin carpenter, judy collins, and buffy saint-marie to name a few that come to mind.
Jazz: Lena Horne, Patricia Barber to name a couple off the top. So many great blues singers as well such as Etta James....

PS: Second Hope Sandoval--limited genre, but eerie beauty. Same for Enya, and Clannad vocalist.

Sorry for the faux pas Bob, but why is she off limits? I don't like all her work by any stretch, but on material like Ode to Billy Joe, Touch of Honey, etc she sounds great, and her engineers always do a terrific job in my humble opinion.... If it truly is a no-no to discuss, just PM me.

You'll all thank me for this one.

She drop kicked Holly Cole out of the top spot in my listening room.
