Surprising to me, there are no Amy Winehouse fans.  Nina Simone is another.  I agree on Cassandra Wilson.  Of course Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.  Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Abby Lincoln, Etta James, Peggy Lee all deserve mention

I was laying in bed this morning thinking "oh no, I forgot Abby Lincoln. I think she really gets to the emotional core of the music. The others you mention are good choices too, although I must admit Cassandra Wilson does nothing for me.
As far as Amy Winehouse, the only thing I've heard of hers is the live song she did on the Grammy's last year. I thought it was fantastic and put her on my "to buy" list, but then I kind of forgot about her. I'll have to remedy that. Thanks for the reminder.....  :D

I forgot one... Lucille!

I have a BB King album entitled Lucille where BB King tells the story of his guitar.  He explains that he loves it so much because his guitar can sound like so many great vocalists..."Got a little Mahalia Jackson in there!"

I have to put in my vote for:
Rosanne Cash
Tracy Nelson
Chrissy Hines
Bonnie Raitt
Linda Ronstadt (varies - she has been around for so long)

It is hard to leave out
Sandy Sasso
Susanne McKorkle
Diana Krall
Holly Cole
Maria Muldaur
Patricia Barber - especially live
and so many more

Can we start a list of top female singers we never want to ever, ever hear again (Celine Dion perhaps, or as my friend described her, Canada's revenge on the US)

Ain't that the truth.  I would include Cher right up there with her personally.  Have you ever seen Celine Dion interviewed?  Empty Head Award of the Year, hands down.  I think these two ladies work right across the street from each other along with Wayne Newton somewhere close.  I'd rather see a floor show in Ciudad Acuna on a bad nite, anytime.

Yikes, I can't believe I forgot K.D.Lang. She's way up near the top. And Marianne Faithfull's pretty fab too.

I'm surprised to see no one else mentioning my current fave Lizz Wright. Her current release The Orchard is my favorite release of 2008 so far. Great, great record; mostly originals, with a few well chosen covers, including a reverent and goosebump inducing version of Led Zeppelin's Thank You  Check it out here:

Here's one of her own songs:

Man o man thanks for that: what pipes and her band isn't chopped liver either: wow.

I found only one person had:

Katie Melua - I really like her style, there are a couple of oriental gals that sound similar to her. - Mimi Lo

Annie Lennox
Jem
Patricia Barber - only because the only thing I have heard from her was a live Binaural recording that sounded cool.
Ann Wilson - this may be sentimental from my youth driving this one.

Denverdoc named a couple of my all-time favorites--Joan Baez and Kate Wolf--but, like he said, folk artists have been neglected here. Some Brit ladies I really like are:

Sandy Denny (Fairport, Fotheringay, solo)
Jacqui McShee (Pentangle)
Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span)

And I don't believe anyone's mentioned Yma Sumac--"Inca Princess" of the five-octave voice. Most of her material was, unfortunately, wretched, but one song you should absolutely hear is "Chuncho-the Forest Creatures." Here, accompanied only by a classical guitar, light percussion, and occasional flute, she imitates various animals of the rain forest, from the deep baritone growl of the panther to the chattering of monkeys to the twittering of birds. And it's a decently composed piece of strangeness, full of interesting dynamic shifts, and drenched in mid-'50s analog reverb. Mono recording, but with depth.
Brian-  I just read that Yma Sumac died Nov 1.  She must have been a very old doll.  She was making records when I was about 12.

In my earlier post I forgot Shelby Lynne and Lila Downs. By now everybody must have heard Shelby's Just a Little Lovin so I'll say no more. Lila's new album Shake Away is as colorful as the cover (check it out on Amazon).  She sings in Spanish and English with a voice that's strong, clear, and beautiful over God knows how many octaves. She's a singer's singer with oodles of taste and feeling. Fair warning to those with close the borders views - you won't care for some of her lyrics. She's very sympathetic to immigrants.

Classic Jazz Divas                  Modern Divas

Ella Fitzgerald                        Jane Monheit
Billie Holiday                          Cassandra Wilson
Sarah Vaughn                        Sarah McLachlan
Kelley Smith                          Christine McVie
Dinah Washington                   Alison Krauss

I am glad someone mentioned her, she is a much better singer than a lot of people listed in this thread, even if the music is not your cup of tea.
