Quick skim, can't believe I didn't see....

Brandi Carlile !!!?
Go buy the album "The Story" now...!  maybe self titled first album. I like the songs off the most recent one played live, Give up the Ghost, but the album was messed up by the producers I think. Or get Live at Easy Street. A must see live!

Some unknowns to check out,

Heather McEntire,
current band Mount Moriah. New album in a couple months. They have a demo/ep called "The Letting Go" available at Holidays for Quince records website. Her other band Un Deax Trois has a cool sound too. Mount Moriah was oppening recently for Indigo Girls and Amy Rays rock band project. Amazing live!

Larkin Grim,
interesting bio, good live. Live sounds like a strange mix of Carly Simon and Carol King that went to hang out with the doors for a while on halucinogens and getting a little dark. Albums are for the adventurous. Way out there on a couple. If you can find the live compilation at a show it's ok. She gave me a random one just wraped in paper. Her and some friends in an attic on Acid for a couple days. I think I would have to be in the same mind set to get into it.

Katie Herzig,
former Grammy nominee, new album soon, has a couple othes since Grammy. Interesting voice, higher pitcher, maybe a little child like, but not like Joanna Newsome, but nice.

Queen Latifah

I have seen good performance in movies with her, but does she sing also?  :o
I'm not too much into rap.

Karrin Allyson (The best of the best. If you like Krall, Naylor, Gardot, etc. you should listen to Allyson's "Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane").
Emmylou Harris (lifetime achievement award)
Rosanne Cash (still sings like an angel)
Billie Holiday (especially the late records when her voice was damaged but she imbued every song with depth of feeling)
Marianne Faithfull (see previous comment)

No particular order -

Annie Halsm
Lorenna McKennitt
Amanda Parsons
Stella Vander
Lisa Gerrard

There are a ton of modern female vocalists that sing with progressive metal bands that have technically great voices.

I'm not saying they are among my favorites, but it sure is hard to argue with their technical abilities.

Going to throw out a local talent from St. Louis that I'm sure Bob is aware of:
Erin Bode

She tours quite extensively and even has an album up on HD Tracks.  She may not be my top act having picked up many new artists from this thread, but she is worth a listen.

After the last few posts I think there are more artists listed in this thread that I haven't heard than artists with whom I am familiar. So much music . . . so little time :)

Not in order:

k.d. lang
Sinéad O'Connor ( Am I not your girl? is brilliant - http://www.amazon.com/Am-I-Not-Your-Girl/dp/B000003JBI )
Cleo Laine
Cara Dillon
Sara Vaughan

These are my favourites as of late, but they are by no means the *only*  female vocalists I listen to...

In no particular order,

Marta Gómez
Omara Portuondo
Yuon Sun Nah
Esperanza Spalding

If you don't know any of the names there, I recomend you google it, check her out in some video site and you'll probably end up hoocked, specialy Marta, she's very very good, Omara puts soul in her songs like no other I've heard, the other two names are popular by now, so no introduction needed.

(and hello everybody, this is my first post)

Always in Heavy Rotation:
Rikki Lee Jones
Etta James
Rory Block
Julie Miller
Patsy Cline

Have to admit, though, that I could make a list of 20 or maybe even 50 pretty easily. Best not stare at the list too long else I would substitute a few, but the above are all great if you're not familiar with them all. Don't tell Joni she's not on the list, she'd kill me. As far as the one I would most want to date, that's easy ... Carly Simon. If I was quite a few years younger then make that Alizee.
