this new 15" woofer has an xmax of 18mm that means a new driver design. He wouldn't design it unless it met certain criteria like very low distortion with an excellent transient response

It must be something special indeed for a design that large to keep up with the speed of ribbon drivers.  Most cone drivers tend to be much smaller when mated to ribbons, for that reason.

I guess! Brian be careful when you fire those up! You are just to the east of my favorite city and I don't want you to cause a repeat of 5AM April 18th 1906! :nono:

Our new 15" is low mass and high acceleration, with a huge motor. Cone is a vitrified paper/Kevlar laminate.

It is not the woofer that mates with the ribbons, but an outboard subbass in a Very Solid enclosure.

The powered VSS (Very Solid Sub) is zero dB down at 20Hz and will reproduce subsonics (-10dB/14Hz nearfield).  It's $1650 in mls satin black, rosewood or ebony and $1850 in piano black.  A nonpowered version is $400 cheaper and has two inputs (L+R).  Weight is 165 lbs, of which 22 lbs is the driver.

The reason for the VSS (VERY SOLID) designation is that I beleive the baffles are 2 full inches thick. :o :o aa

And would this "VSS" utilize a passive radiator in traditional VMPS fashion?

Yes, there is a slot-loaded, mass loaded downfiring 15" PR.

"A nonpowered version is $400 cheaper and has two inputs (L + R)"  Does the powered version also have the two inputs?

Where's the pictures of the VSS? I'd like a picture of the driver too.

I used one of the PE Titanics as a role model for our 15", which is being made domestically.

I'll bet alot of money this driver will be much superior to the Titanic 15" with lower distortion and more.

I've never heard or measured a PE woofer but a lot of the Titanic engineering is good, such as the shorting ring, progressive spider, and venting scheme.  I'm shooting for less than 2% THD at 1W/20Hz plus high  output levels at low distortion. That's what the 18mm of Xmax is for.

I'm going to use a very heavy, Dynamat damped stamped basket from Alpha Products of Chicago instead of the Chinese-made cast basket of the Titanic, which tends to be brittle (I have a collection of shattered Chinese cast frames that arrived that way).  Cone and spider are from RDM of Arkansas.

I should also point out that pole pieces, front and back plates, and magnet donuts all come from China now.  They invariably require deburring and often remilling, as the offshore yokes are frequently out of round.
The domestic assembler (in our case Misco of Minneapolis) must do this, plus wind voicecoils, assemble, charge and test.

Hope you're getting up early because I'm chomping at the bit to see these. A design description as well as the speakers capabilities will also be nice.

Lots of pressure there.

Now we know who to blame if they turn out bad

Just kidding.

Although I do have pics of the finished cabs in China, it will be great to see what they look like fully loaded.  I also have some of the drawings that are very cool.

But nothing is as good as the real deal.

Where does the new sub fit in the VMPS "food chain"?
