hidden files on HDD on BDP-1
« on: 15 Sep 2011, 03:49 pm »
Hi,

Today I had to experiment a little, and because of that I controlled it with its front-panel buttons and display. I noticed some strange names/files, I had not seen before in Finder/Mac on the HDD. Because finder by default hides hidden files (...), I just 'unhid' them with the following command in Terminal (defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder). Et voila, there are all the strange names I saw in the front display.

Q1: should those files be there?
Q2: if so, could the BDP-1 be told not to display them, because it makes controlling the BDP with the display very difficult. And maybe even dangerous, because there are file and executables there, Finder hides not without reason.

Greetings, Marius

Hi Marius,

Yes the front panel will read any file on the attached drive.  I always delete any files that are not music files from my attached drives.

Ok, thanks.

this is what I've got:

There's even a .Trashes on the HDD. Guess we'll had to trash that too.

Hope I'm not getting rid of any index file the BDP-1 or related software need....

right now! listening to @berlinPhil, through the Na7004 internetradio and the BDA1, playing  Pfitzner #Kaminski #Rihm and #Strauss in #Berlin ow.ly/6vyed

Great site, this Worldconcerthall: http://www.worldconcerthall.com/en/schedule/berlin_philharmonic_plays_pfitzner_kaminski_rihm__strauss_in_berlin/891/

Thanks James, and believe me, I'm only being such a pain because the BDP-1 makes me want to get the most out if it and the music I love. Sorry for that.

Greetz,
Marius

No need to be sorry - just worried that you needed time to smell the roses but it appears you have that covered. :thumb:

From the engineering point of view, wouldn't it be far simpler to filter out non- music files?
Save your customers a load of GRIEF!!!!
The firmware code isn't difficult, it's the sort of stuff I write all the time and I'm an electronics engineer
What value is there to showing non-music files?
The BDP-1 can't do anything with them, or am I missing the point.
You could enable or disable this option via the Settings in the web interface.

I believe I mentioned something similar before regarding album art -never did get a reply though. Maybe I'm sensitive to other stuff to others?

I really want to delete those hidden files on my hard drive too.  I am a Mac user and I dont know how to set the preference to display those files to delete them  :( I remember in Windows, you can set something like "Display all files"

Could anyone please show me how to delete those hidden files so they dont show up on my BDP-1?
Thanks in advance

Hi,

I just delete them from the USB drive while it is loaded in the computer.

Also I find I can delete them using the wireless network.

as I said before, would be even more "user friendly" if the BDP-1 display only showed valid music files and folders.

Hey, Marius, out of interest, does MPad show all these hidden files?

No it doesn't....
Max does show a lot of them, but only in .Trashes, all the other files/folders in Finder (Mac) are not there. I deleted the .Trashes from the HDD, but I was still there in Max  I've updated several times but only after I emptied the thrash on my Mac those files were gone in MAx too.

Hi James,

The problem with hidden files is you never know whether the System needs those files, so it might be dangerous to delete them, without full System-knowledge.

Somehow they got there, and programs might need them.

Terry's suggestion might be the elegant solution: program the interface to only show music files/ folders.
like the Mpad interface.

Thanks,
Marius

I also think deleting hidden files is a bad idea.
In Windows, you get the hidden file Thumbs.db which is a cache of the thumbnails when you're viewing in Thumbnails mode.

Yes with Mac you have to empty the trash.

Hi Terry,

The BDP-1 does not need any of the hidden files so there is no concern there.

The BDP-1 Front Panel navigation should hide the following system files:

., .., ._.Trashes, .Trashes, .fseventsd, .Spotlight-V100, .Trash, System Volume Information, .HFS+ Private Directory Data*, .journal, .journal_info_block

We have just recently added the following to our Sept 30 2011 release:

.DS_Store, .apdisk and .com.apple.*
