Yesterday's score at a garage sale.....
« on: 10 Sep 2011, 07:02 pm »
Picked up this all tube Knight receiver and speakers for $10 at a garage sale. Everything works well, I'm sure they are all original tubes. Tuning eye works too.
I've never seen an underbelly with so much point to point wiring!!!

That's really cool. Something about it reminds me of my dad's old Harman Kardon tuner.

How does it sound?

I have this same receiver in my 1969 Allied Electronics catalog. It's badged as the Allied model 333, and mine is exactly the same, except for the Knight International badge. The 3 way speakers are pretty nice too, and they are the model KN 3005.

I was dismayed at the specifications for the tuner section in the Allied catalog, quoting a 3.0 sensitivity spec, but this thing is pulling in stations from the cities like a bastard and holding on to them very well. A little more noise, but instruments sound very real. That is a good trade off for me.

Here is the other bonus, the AM section actually works quite well.

I am a bit perplexed on the Allied/Knight connection. I thought that Knight was only kits, but this is clearly factory built. If someone can fill me in on some of the history here, I'd appreciate it, as apparently, I have it not all figured out.

BTW, it and the speakers have found their way into the studio. Another odd thing is that all the lights work! I just don't get why the guy sold it for so little. He obviously wanted to get rid of it, and I obliged.

Very fun.

John, it's no powerhouse, at 12 watts RMS per channel, but it's tube power. I can only describe the sound as "romantic", being very warm, but also very "stereo" (when the dumb bastard (me) has the selector in the right position) and then for $10 and it all works, how can you not like it.

I'm kind of slow to warm up to things, so I'll need to listen to this thing for awhile before I make any more "how's it sound" comments.

I should try out the phono section too.

Good find Wayner!  I've got a pair of very hefty Knight KB-85 amps.  I plug them in, whenever a more modern amp goes down, and I find that I am very pleased with the sound- esp. a very musical midrange.  Knight put out some very decent products in their day.
$10! What a steal!- that's what I paid for one of my amps, but it needed quite a bit of work.

I believe you have a re-badged Pioneer SX-34.

See:

Do a google search on Pioneer SX-34 & you'll find more info & should be able to find a schematic.

I had one of these, it was a really nice unit. The phono section was especially nice. I have a schematic, if you need one.
