Can you use a laptop as a remote for SB?
« on: 3 Sep 2011, 09:39 pm »
If my entire music library is located on my desktop is there a way to use my laptop as a remote using squeezebox remote? I tried a couple of things to make it work, but I'm still pretty novice at the inner workings of this wretched software.

edit: I do use iPhone and iPad via iPeng to control SB, which is wonderful, but I would like to be able to use my laptop if I've got it as well.  :thumb:

I would think that pointing your laptop at the remote web interface would work, something like:  http://127.0.0.1:9000/

Pez....I know with some Browsers (Chrome I'm sure of) you can get a plug in that sits up in your browser until you click on it and a little remote, mini player will launch. My Squeezebox.com Remote Extension is the name of the plug in for Google's Chrome. I don't know if Firefox has one but most likely they do somewhere....

It works that way on safari as well. I think Ted may be on to something. I'll give the a try when I get back home.  :thumb:

Yes, what Ted says should work. I've also done it.

Ted's answer would only work if you are running Squeeze Box Server on that laptop as he has provided the so called "loop back" address.
The principle is that you can view Squeeze Box Server in a browser interface by supplying the IP address and the port (9000).  You alsp must be on the same subnet as the server.
This will work in Firefox as well as Internet Explorer.  This is not exactly news.

Oops, that's right.  So, Larry, would adding the server's IP address work (from the laptop)?

Ted:
The server's IP address (usually in the format 192.168.x.x:9000) will work.  I've noticed that some of the newer Linksys broadband routers provide a guest account for visitors that leases an address that is actually on a different subnet for improved security.
In my system, the pc running SBS, is in a different room to get all that noise, mechanical and electrical, away from the listening environment.

The IP address was not the issue, selecting the appropriate player was. Any way thanks for the help, it's up and running and I have yet one more nerdy way to control my SB.  :thumb:
