PMC speakers while sounding good(of course debatable)......must be one of the most basic/boring looking speakers on the market LOL
I could just make a sweeping, generalized statement of questionable value but's that's already been covered so I'll do this instead:
I have owned both KEF Reference Series as well as PMC. The KEF's were fine speakers. I actually replaced them with a set of PMC's which were less $$$ but sounded better over a wider variety of music. That's a prerequisite here. The KEF's always seemed to do some things very well- especially vocals - but were kinda slow-sounding on stuff that needed a speaker which could keep up. I guess we're talking about the mystic PRaT here. I'd give the "box series" PMC's I had the edge over the KEF's in terms of overall imaging whereas I'd give the KEF's a slight edge in presenting a vocal - they could do the "holograph" thing impressively. As to the whole Uni-Q thing,
meh...The PMC's were a
bit laid-back in the mids but
much better in the bottom end. Very deep, clean bass - and not that "one-note" bass thing that takes up space but is really just a drone. Overall, I thought the PMC's were more impressive sonically and easier to live with in terms of positioning, etc. but the two shared a certain similarity in terms of their overall voicing - the "British" sound? When I recently replaced my PMC's I can honestly say that the idea of owning another set of KEF's really didn't enter my mind. Would've been tough anyway because they can't seem to maintain distribution here and there's usually a good reason for that.
As to styling, "purposeful" is a word I've seen used to describe PMC and it's like using "handsome" to describe a woman. The box-series PMC's are certainly a conservatively-styled product but I think that just goes along with the whole approach to speaker-building at that house - no nonsense, focus on what matters. By the same token, PMC is not oblivious to style as can be seen in the new FACT series which offers a deliberately "up-market" look without veering into the garish or vulgar. Those whose tastes run more towards the cartoonish or ostentatious are already well-catered to by the speaker industry and it could be convincingly argued that the KEF 207's would certainly fit comfortably into that category.
Personally, I would say that one should consider any opinions on style highly suspect when they originate from someone with a Pinocchio tattoo on his arm. Just sayin'...
LOL...
