King Crimson - Red [hard to believe this came out in '74!)

For the fusion side of prog (not metal really): Pierre Moerlen's Gong is excellent. And the Daevid Allen Gong is equally good as well.

The 1st UK album is very good (Bruford, Holdsworth, Wetton, Jobson). As a matter of fact a reformed UK will tour in 2012 with Terry Bozzio on drums!
Anything with Allan Holdsworth on guitar is good prog.

Anyone else here know "District 97"? Just listening to "Hybrid Child" this morning. Definitely metal influenced. Female vocals, but not the Evenescent kind - much proggier.

Last night I managed to come across a retro thrash goldmine. With all the awesome\campy cool artwork and ye olde 80's metal sounds I couldn't stop the Paypal dollars from flying away. I might regret it later, but it was a warm rush of nostalgia. I must admit the website doesn't work as easily as it could, but it's cool that full songs play when you click on the band's album page.

Very good band. I saw them play at CalProg a couple of years ago.

This band is loaded with talented musicians.

The vocalist (Leslie Hunt) was a contestant on American Idol in 2007 before District 97. I believe she made the top 10.

ACCEPT and OVER KILL both have brand new album.
I will buy both CDs but I have mixed feeling about the new Accept's front man but the Over Kill is a great album and sounds like old school.

I think it's excellent. Yes, it's a bit derivative of Tool, but what doesn't draw on that which preceded it? Credit them for what they created – a stunning debut album (with the minimum of supporting literature – song titles & basic credits printed on rear cover). It's hard to believe Joel is the former singer of Willowtree – his voice seems much better utilized on this project (have only heard samples of the former – not interested). To anyone who would suggest that they 'find their own sound', I retort that they already have – not only is it actually different from Tool (regardless of the parallels), but it's so fully baked that it cannot be forced or contrived.

Personally, I hope they don't change. I'd welcome more material like this, and there's not a single dud on the whole album. Order a copy from Amazon today! It took about six weeks to get mine (temporarily out of stock), but it was well worth the wait.
