I did a search to see if this has been covered at all recently, and I do believe it has not. Sooooo...

Can be any genre, but please explain what gets you so pumped to listen to it. We're talking recording, the quality, the mix, the vibe, the room, the imaging, whatever.

I have one to start:

Phoenix - United (2000)

This is French rock band Phoenix's first album. What's so great about this recording? Two words... SUPER TIGHT. It really is the perfect recording to kick off a new millenium. The guitars, bass, drums, keys, and sundry accessory instruments all feel like they've been laser dialed to perfect beams of sonic quality. This isn't  overly compressed, loudness wars modern wall of sound, this is sleek, warm, popping pop rock goodness. Oh, and there's an instrumental track with a 'solo' of dueling alto saxophones- the chorus effect they produce together is way cool. Very bold for a modern rock band. Some great electro sounds weaved in throughout the album, as well.

*Side note: Roman Coppola's music video for this album's song "Funky Squaredance" is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in NY.

So many to list, can't think of them all at this time.
Wow, that's a powerful request.

It's a mood thing.
Right now, it's Harry Connick "She" because the sound quality is VERY good, and it's a jammin' thing.

more later.......

I agree, but I think I can come up with one:

Cassandra Wilson-Bluelight Till Dawn..Very artsy with some unique arrangements of a few tunes and recorded very well.
Victor Wooten-Palmystery- Hey it's Victor Wooten! Very intense and high quality recoding.

Ok...That's two, but good ones none the less :thumb:

Me too!  The 'most engaging' piece is what stopped me from answering immediately.  :duh:

Once at a friendly GTG, I played The Battle from the Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack. Suddenly, one of my best friends jumped up from the sweet spot and started conducting the full orchestra, with conviction. He seemingly became a part of the music, for quite some time. That's engaging.  :D

I, too, will be back after some thought.

Have fun,

Jerry

I'll pass. Impossible to answer. Carry on.

Ok, maybe I set the bar a bit high. Maybe it should just be A particularly great/innovative/engaging recording. You can just do one that you've listened to recently, where you thought, 'man, they just nailed the sound...' easier?

Oh well, I tried. They can't all be ringers, I suppose.

Nobody wants to talk recording? Really? Isn't that what we're all sitting around listening to?

<sigh>

In fairness to Wolfy, look hard at the thread he posted. Plenty of great recordings there. Try just this one excerpt to start with. :thumb:

Have fun,

I will give this a go.  It seems like an easy question until you start to narrow it down.  Anyway, this song is not likely to everyone's taste, but I find it very enjoyable and it is from a new and hopefully upcoming artist: "In the Water" by Annie and the Beekeepers.  Free download for those that are interested: http://www.mastersfromtheirday.com/episode-2-annie-and-the-beekeepers-pie-studios/

The Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Revisited
In 1988 the CJs released The Trinity Sessions. It was recorded in the Trinity Church in Toronto largely because the church has excellent acoustics.
In 2008 the CJs invited Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant, and Vic Chesnutt to redo the entire set with the band and named it Trinity Revisited. Ryan Adams kills on 200 More Miles, for me it's the best song on the album.
It's well recorded, and the guests add so much to an already good album of songs. I call it chill with groove - It's easy to lay back and listed to but keeps my feet tapping throughout.
Check it out!

Right now I can't stop listening to RUSH, I'm on a serious RUSH bender now that my system can do them justice: 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, all their oldest albums are the best.

Some of the best recordings and just mind bending music.

XTC-Nonsuch on Virgin Records, V2699. It's on vinyl and is a double LP at it was also released on CD. The vinyl version is much better, tho it will be hard to find and it will cost you an arm and a leg.

One of the top LPs in my collection, the kind that gives you goose bumps, you feel that shiver up and down your spine. The message is awesome from the start, featuring "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead".

One of the finest recordings in the rock genre in my opinion.

Nice one. I love the original Trinity Sessions (one mic!) Wasn't aware of this project, will listen asap.

I also own some Phoenix. "It's not like that" and "Amadeus Phoenix".

The latter is that very rare modern pop album that doesn't make me want to throw it across the room.

Yeah, I really like "Wolfgang Amadeus"... "It's Never Been Like That", not so much.

Rclark

Agreed. I bought "It's not like that" because of Amadeus, and I was dissappointed.
