Installing Cooling Fans for Bryston 9B SST2
« on: 18 Aug 2011, 11:29 am »
Dear Everyone,

This weekend I plan on installing two 80 mm cooling fans that I purchased from ProCool

http://www.rackfans.com/modules.php?name=ProCooL_AVP-280T

The fans will be installed on the back of the cabinet above my 9BSST2 that is in a cabinet that is 23" W x 10.25" H open at the front and back, but close on all other sides.

My question(s):

Should I install the fans so they both exhaust or draw air into the cabinet?  Alternatively, I could install the fans so one draws air into the cabinet and one removes air from the cabinet.  I am just curious on what configuration is best for the amp.

Best,

John

This is interesting but I have no idea what would be the correct configuration  :duh:

I would think it should be similar to the configuration in a similar professional rack that includes cooling fans.

If I would install something like that I would first consider in what way the fans would not bother me. Not only in noise, but also in airflow.
It is extremely annoying to sit in your fav chair, listening to music, and be bothered by a constant hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Then there is the airflow across your lap, or, even worse, in your face.

I would mount them in such a way that noise is minimal, preferably non existent, and the airflow direction is against the back wall.

Good point!  You may want to experiment with noise reduction materials between the fan mounting and the enclosure e.g. mouse pad foam or the like.  Foam or corregated materials around the intake and exhaust surrounding faces can help to act as a muffler of sorts.

John,

go to this website http://www.middleatlantic.com/resources/whitepapers.htm and download "Thermal Management White Paper" All the information you are looking for is there.

Maybe you should consider those with SSO bearings (whatever that is :|) because they r more silent and almost no vibration at low rpm.  Noctua makes great cooling fans especially if you are considering noise and vibration issues.

my suggetion would be large diameter (>120mm) , low rpm (<800rpm), both blowing from the back of the cabinet/rack plus thick aluminium frame and rubber vibration suspention (all low cost materials if you had the tools) . Because you are not trying to build a hardcore PC case with neons flashing about, you're just trying to move those hot air away.

Thank you to everyone for their advice.  From what I understood from reading the whitepapers an exhaust seems to make the most sense.  I will install both fans (which are whisper quiet) as exhaust fans at the back of the cabinet.

James just curious if Bryston has a recommendation?

Cheers,

John

By reading my 14B's manual,  there's supposed to be an 'optional cooling module' made by bryston. But not sure if that's specially designed for professional rack mounts.

We use to offer fan packages many years ago but in most installations they were not required.

This tiny 4 inch HV fan is very quiet, can be angled to blow in different directions and will move more air than rack fans. They cost under $10 at Walmart and I use one for each of my tube amps.

I installed the fans this evening.  I have them set to turn on at 30 C and turn off at 28 C.  I have the thermocouple placed between the heatsink fins and the display is reading 40C.  I believe that this temperature is normal.

Temperature eventually got up to 42C and frankly I don't feel a lot of air being exhausted.  Today I will flip the fans around so they blow cool air into the enclosure; this should work much better.  It is my understanding that Bryston amps are designed to operate between 40 to 45 C so even at 42C I am within specs.

Best,

John

I think I will need a cooling  fan for myself instead of the amps if the weather won't change soon.
It has been a hot summer so far and a few days ago while I was listening to music in my room,it was very hot.I walked in front of my rack and put my hand on 4Bs and 7Bs but it was not hot really. Then I put my other hand on my head wooooooooo it was hot.

John,

Show us a picture of your setup, unless it is rack mounted or a very very tight cabinet you may be fussing a little too much. Are the amps powered on 24/7?
