My question is why?
Sounds like you are happy with your setup and you are not missing out.
I have a standard definition television and I'm happy with that, I appreciate sound quality more than picture quality. My neighbor has a wall to wall flat screen high def hanging over his fireplace. I don't feel that I miss anything.

I don't mean to say that your system is 'standard' and Squeezebox is 'high def', don't get me wrong, what I want to say is: all that matters is that you are content.

As long as you are happy, don't worry about what others do.

I'm happy, but also curious. Hence the post.

Nick and Wilbert,

Just received my SB Touch.

I guess I am a late bloomer.

It is a very nice interface between my digital tunes and my 2 channel outfit.

There is still much to be done there, but what ease of use, and the possibilities

of amazing music are endless.

Just look into your crystal ball.

Perhaps here you get an idea of the applications available on a Squeezebox:

http://www.mysqueezebox.com/appgallery

Take a look in the App Gallery, all free to use, some apps depend on web services that require a free account or paid subscription (For example Pandora).

Nice one! The Oppo 93 looks like a great piece of kit. I kinda want one. Are you outputting your audio via analog out from the Oppo (using its DAC) or are you going digital out to an external DAC?

I didn't know about Twonky. How do you like it (GUI, user experience, ease of setup, etc.)?

I output the audio via analog from the Oppo to my tube pre-amp.  The DAC in the 93 is pretty good, in fact better than my tube DAC ever was.  There is also an Oppo 95 which is built and sold as an audiophile quality machine with a better DAC, analog circuit and upgraded power supply.  The video is the same as the 93 though.

When it comes down to it, Twonky doesn't play much of a role beyond turning my iMac into a server.  Once set up you don't really use it much.  The interface is on the Oppo, and that interface is mediocre, but functional.  The whole setup though didn't take long to put together, maybe I played with it for an hour and it works.  It sounds good to my ears and I couldn't tell the difference between playing a ripped CD over the setup vs. playing the disk in the Oppo.

My guess is that the biggest problem with USB output is the electrical connection messes with the analog by adding noise.  Wireless avoids that.  Bits are bits, and if you can't transfer the bits 100% you are doing something really wrong.

Anyway, I love our squeezeboxes, and even more importantly/remarkably my wife loves our squeezeboxes. By far the most important pieces of gear I have due to how they enable music to become an automatic part of most of our time at home.

+1.   Squeezebox was a reasonably priced test of whether I would ever trade in CDs for hard drives.  When the answer was yes, I eventually moved toward the Bryston BDP-1 (btw, it is a network device so no need to move the hard drive for ripping).  I'm still burning-in the Bryston, but it is clearly in a different league from the Touch.

My wife now has the Touch in the bedroom and a logitech internet radio in the kitchen.  She is starting to use the BDP-1.  So, to answer your question:  to integrate music into the home.
