Question about sheilding
« on: 10 Aug 2011, 07:47 pm »
When trying to electrically shield a device, say a transformer inside a preamp, does the metal shielding need to be grounded to the ground connection of the IEC to be effective?

I am thinking about lining a section of the chassis with copper sheeting and would like to know if that in itself will be effective in keeping electrical noise out of the audio ckts.

Best,
Ed

Depends on what frequency you are trying to shield. For stopping hum caused by magnetic inductance from transformer, you need something that is magnetically permeable, not copper. To shield from RF interference like AM radio then copper would work.

The basic answer is yes, ground the shield to the earth connection on the IEC connector.
