Rise of the Planet of the Apes
« on: 6 Aug 2011, 07:10 pm »
My wife is out of town for a couple of days so I thought I would go catch a show as I felt like monkeying around. Caught the 11:30 am showing.
Hadn't seen one of these since the original Planet Of The Apes with Charles Heston but this one was a thoroughly enjoying piece of film that kept me entertained throughout.3.25 stars out of 4.

Permit me to venture a guess about the ending.  It ends amicably?

typical hollywood mindless entertainment, imo - 2 out of 4 stars.  ok if you have nothing better to do, but i certainly wouldn't call it a good movie.  i laughed a lot but not sure it was supposed to be funny.

ymmv,

Well, of course, Doug.  I mean who thinks they're in for high art (that's a rhetorical question)?  Who's spending the most money at the box office, yo?  I mean just look around at the ticket window. Well, it's that kind of movie.

Saw this a couple of days back. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Andy Serkis as Caesar was amazing .... it was his interview on NPR that perked my interest in this movie, and i was not disappointed. I thought this movie did a great job as a prequel to the "Planet of the apes".

 "I am home ... "

It is the deciding scene in the movie. When the chimp says that.
Superb movie!!!
Utterly fantastic!!!
Fantastic work by the 3d artists! Really believable movements! Really good chine walk!!!
It really is a high, better than all other CGI movies so far!!!
The Facial mimicry, the story, the script, everything! Wonderful!!!! A gem! Really a gem!
It even edges out Avatar, even that one... that is a feat!!! A real one!!!

Imagine this team, set even darker, making a new segment of say the Jurassic park saga.. Now that would be something!!! !!!

I too much enjoyed it...HIGHLY entertaining.  Probably I'll see it again before it disappears, and probably I won't buy it.  Both the same with 'Captain America'.

I agree, Rise Of the Planet of the Apes was a great movie, as was Captain America(a great screen adaptation).

I'm getting it in Blue Ray, rest assured gent's rest assured!
I think it is a game changer...

Remember "the running man" ? Featuring the VERY first CGI replace a person with a CGI image scene?

This movie changes it in a way not seen before, now they are crossing the species barrier...
A monkey acting as a human, and making it believable? Wow!!! Wowser!!!

Hollywood better be on the prowl for this one, because now they've got some CGI artists really out and out.... there... with caracter acting actors!!!

It is scary this!! It really is!!!  :nono:

Monkey business? Pun indeed, so intended!!!

Ok, Doug, I think I'm gonna give it a shot at a matinee when prices are lower.  I'm a snob when it comes to movies like this.  Thought Avatar was nothing more than a cowboys vs. indians retread with the indians the good guys.  So, I'll play like I'm fourteen and have never seen a planet of the apes movie and see what happens.  The special effects didn't strike me as very special in the previews but you guys have given the movie a second life.  This coming weekend probably :thumb:.

avatar, imo, is one of the best movies of all time, if this apes movie is used as the comparison.  if you did not like avatar, i think you will like this one even less.  (btw, this apes movie was the first one i have ever seen.  i had zero desire to see any of the others, and zero desire to see this one, but my wife wanted to see it...)

Dougie, you didn't like my analogy about cowboys and indians I gather.   You know, good guys vs. bad guys only made futuristic.  "Same old beef stew", in other words, as Duke Ellington used to say.  I gonna do my best to suspend disbelief and take in Planet on its own terms.  Avatar's technical achievements are another conversation, however.  Cheers.

ps-  As recent sci-fi flicks go, District 9 knocked my sox off.  Yours?  That quasi documentary style was highly original thought I and the lead role was great anti hero.  My wife hated it.

Avatar one of the best movies of all time?

Heck, it doesn't even make the top 10 for Sci-Fi movies, let alone all movies.

What else do you consider a great movie?

George

Agreed. District 9 makes it to the top of my sci-fi list. Very original, and i'm very interested to see what the director comes up next.

Ha!  I completely agree with this.  Avatar was a BAD, but pretty (I guess) movie.

district 9 is a great movie, period, imo.  not simply mindless entertainment, as i judge rise of the planet of the apes.
