Big thumbs up on District 9- one of the smartest & best sci-fi films of all time.  I'm anxious to see RotPotA, too, but I will wait til it's been out for a couple weeks.  I hate crowds.

My significant other wants me to take her to see the Apes movie, that is not typical.  I guess I'll grin and bear it.

not even close, george - re-read what i said:

"avatar, imo, is one of the best movies of all time, IF this apes movie is used as the comparison."

i thought avatar was great, only in comparison to the apes movie.

I think the monkeys still win...avatar was boring as h3ll.  :green:

Finally got the chance to see RotPotA last night and all I can say is WOW! :o :thumb:  It was way better than I could have expected.  I'll admit I sort of though we'd see Golem again but Andy Serkis really blew the roof off with his performance!  And the CG has come along way since LOtRs, at least where doing faces is concerned.  The amount of expression and emotion was uncanny- Caesar was more "real" than some of the actors!  And John Lithgow turned in one of the finest performances of his career IMO.

****************** Minor Spoiler Alert! *********************

I love the way the apes were portrayed.  Despite being horribly abused and feeling betrayed by humans, Caesar reacts with more humanity than the humans.  Previous films have painted the apes as the villains, but here the roles are reversed.  The apes often have more nuanced emotions than the humans.  The bloodthirsty ones are, for the most part, the humans.

***************** End Spoiler Section!   ******************

The first half of the movie was so compelling that I was somewhat sorry to see the "big finale" that you knew was coming.  I thought Franco was superb, but undoubtedly the star of the show is
Andy Serkis/Caesar. :thumb:

This flick was good, good idea getting behind how it all got started with the apes.

Yeah, this was the best 'blockbuster' of the summer. It actually put the story first! Amazing what can be accomplished if you spend time on a good story and not just throw a whole bunch of effects at people (*cough*Transformers*cough*). Amazing, the difference between the two films: one assumes you are too dumb and lazy to care what is happening, the other has faith you only need a few 'wow' moments because you're so pulled in the story.

When Caesar does a certain something all humans do, particularly 2 year-olds, for the first time halfway through the film, the whole audience was like OHHHH SHHHIIIIT! And it was a very simple thing, but the buildup was so good that when it happened it hit you out of nowhere. One of those moments you remember and talk to people like hey you remember that scene from Rise, oh yeah.

Good solid movie, period.

For an ape movie, this one was quite well done, well worth $1.09 (Redbox). I got involved in the story and it moved along nicely. Andy made a terrific ape as was quite believable as Caesar's intelligence increased. I liked the little TV segment about the manned Mars probe though it happened too quick to see if the director put a digitized version of a young Charlton Heston, probably not if there is a sequel planned.
