BDP-1 Issue
« on: 4 Aug 2011, 04:47 pm »
Folks, I am sorry if this has been covered, but I can't see that has. Mind you, there is tons of onfo here to wade through

I am slowly making progress getting into this whole digital music thing, but I am having great difficulty setting up an interface between my BDP and my PC.

I downloaded Firefox and then tried to download Minion, but I get a message that they aren't compatible. :o :duh:

Anyone else run into this?

HI,

Firefox 5 is incompatible with the current Minion but it will work on earlier versions of Firefox.  There should be an updated Minion which will work in 5 soon.

Try GNOME -

MEMO: BDP-1 INTERFACE
SUBJECT: GNOME MUSIC PLAYER CLIENT

December, 2010

Hi Folks,

Here is a link to a new free client for MPD that you can use with the Bryston BDP-1
Digital Player.

Tried it on my Windows 7 laptop and XP desktop with very good results interfacing with
the BDP-1.

http://gmpclient.org/installation

Just install the GMPC part 0.20.0

Thanks James. Does it need Firefox, or can I use Explorer? That was a speedy response, by the way!

Nice thing about GNOME is it does not use a browser and connects directly to the BDP-1.

Oh boy...I loaded Gnome but it's asking for all sorts of stuff like host information to connect? I guess I need to become a computer geek and leave the audio behind....

James, have you experienced this?

I had the same issue at first and then after researching it a little, I found it that you need to make a small change to one of the program files and all is good.

Follow these instructions and all works fine.

Success, lap top wirelessly enabled! Now, how the heck do I access the radio stations with Gnome?

James the only way I got my BDP-! to interact wirelessly with my latop was to create a secondary network with another router. This conflicts with my existing wireless network.

So, off I marched to my local Tiger Direct and bought an ethernet bridge. This can allow any ethernet based device to talk on an existing wireless network, just the ticket or so I thought....

It won't talk to my BDP-1, for some reason. Any idea what the problem could be?

Hi DILBERT. This is how I got my local network BDP-1 connection to work.   I purchased a Netgear Powerline adapter kit. I simply connect one adapter to my router and then  into an electric outlet and connect the BDP-1 to the other adapter(which is plugged into an outlet near the BDP-1,which is in another room than my wireless adapter) via an ethernet wire. Now I am connected to my home network also.Did not have to get a separate router. Thru this setup, I can connect to all the BDP controllers (Bryston Mini,Max..Mpod, Mpad, Minion, Gnome). This also allows me to get Internet Radio thru the BDP-1 as well as art work, etc.
 Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did see those power line based devices while at the store this morning. I would really rather not do it this way. But, ultimately, things just might swing this way.

The thing is that I can connect wirelessly to the Hawking 300N bridge, it just won't allow me to tlak to the BDP with Gnome or Firefox. Really strange. James I would appreciate anything you folks might suggest.

Meanwhile, I think a call into a call center in Calcutta is called for!  :green:

If you are concerned about degradation of sound quality using the power line devices, I can assure that it has had no effect and the music from the BDP is superb.

No not at all, I am just not crazy about putting more RF noise into the power line and there is the overall safety aspect. They kind of remind me of the old 5 tube ac/dc radios...with the chassis connected to one side of the line. :o

I have all my audio equipment on a dedicated line. The adapter is on plugged into a completley separate circuit.
As far as a safety issue, should I be concerned about my hose burning down due to electrical fire?
