Accurate or extended ?
« on: 2 Aug 2011, 10:58 pm »
Hi Folks,
So many years and so many speakers and different sound reproductions.
If we only talk about the bass, and ignore the rest even the Brand name and price but focus on the design.
Which one is your most favorite?I like the accurate and it fits right in sealed box but also learning about open baffle.

I'm a fan of traditional bass reflex but with correct implementation to achieve accurate and extended response without bloating.  Transmission line and sealed would be next but these tend to require more power....no problem I guess if you own Bryston.

I'm in the ported bass reflex camp.

I'd dearly love to hear some transmission line speakers, but I don't know where the closest set would be.  I'd really like to listen to a set of PMC OB1i, PB1i or EB1i's.

In addition, I'd want, at a minimum, a 4B-SST and my CD's to audition them.

In my listening environment would be best.  I try to minimize variables when auditioning new gear.

Actually, the subwoofer in my car is in a sealed box. And I use a 10" Focal sub.

Just did some brush-up reading on the AR-3 and noticed that Wikipedia states:
"For nearly ten years after its introduction, the AR-3 was widely regarded as the most accurate loudspeaker available at any cost...used in countless professional installations, recording studios, and concert halls...In the early 1960s, AR conducted a series of over 75 live vs. recorded demonstrations...a live string quartet was alternated with echo-free recorded music played through a pair of AR-3s...the listeners were largely unable to detect the switchovers from live to recorded, a strong testament to Acoustic Research audio quality."

Though these test results are skeptical - my real question would be:

What is the AR-3 of today?  What speaker, if any today, has an overwhelming consensus agreement on transparency, linearity, truthfulness at a "reasonable" cost???

Beautiful list - TKS!  Just looking into and two (MG 1.7 and Thiel SC4) are in the "affordable" range but the other two are in the $10,000+ "pricey" category.

Also interesting that you are trying the Roger Sanders, as they produce their own quite affodable amplifiers - I've read that those amps work very well with electrostatics, ribbon, quasi-ribbons.

I HATE bass. (just so you know ahead of time)
I actually hate too much bass, rather than just any bass at all. So I really hate the current teenage boy sort of in your face over the top bass which is everywhere. Movies, currnet Rock recordings.. Where the need to massage the guts of the listeners seems to be the main priority.
So I enjoy the bass on my Magnepan 3.6s as just right. With the bryston 4B-SST2 on a big Power Conditioner (Furman REF20i) which tightens up the lows..
I used to have some Infinity RSIIa and they had good bass. I was younger then, and liked to 'Rock" out a bit more. But it was never too much.
Subwoofers? I tried a sub with some B&W 805S I owned, and it was fine used with chamber music, or small group Jazz, but I would turn it off if playing Rock music. So it really was not a good solution.
So just chalk me up to "Bass hater" and leave it at that.
I can far more easily live with minimal bass, than too much.
(I am a upper frequency crazy, and that is the main interesting part of the music IMO...and that has to be absolutely perfect..)

Affordable being $5000
As far you like the bass reflex.
WAVEFORM mac17 would cost you less then that in used market but you bet first you have to find the guy to sell it to you.If you find one that is not working good buy it.You need drivers then pm me or crossover problem then talk to James and you will need let's say 1@4Bsst and 2@3bsst and you can be sure that you are holding a pair speakers at $20,000.
Oh,I almost forgot.Yes,they were hand made in CANADA. :thumb:
