I looked at his name a few times before I got it.
Henry Rollins? Lead in editorial in stereophile?
I'm not sure how I feel, I mean it is not like Iggy POP doing a gap add, but there is a blending of outlines implied. Like hearing joy division muzak at Starbucks.
I do like his work, Fwiw, and am grateful to see him entering audiophilia.
What do you think? It definitely makes one think, perhaps pig destroyer is one step closer to mainstream?

I really enjoyed his piece, thought it was one of the better explanations of our strange affliction.

Quote
Perhaps the mightiest slap in the face of music has been the music file, easily downloaded and put into a playback device. This format strips the meat from the bone. Imagine an orange, squeezed by a gorilla. It's still an orange, but in name only. If Otis Redding could hear his music on MP3, he'd wonder what hack was trying to impersonate him.

Bravo Henry, Bravo.

Vinyl party tonight!
Vinyl party tonight!
Vinyl party tonight!
Vinyl party tonight!

We're gonna have a Vinyl party tonight!

Alright!

We're gonna have a Vinyl party alright!

Tonight!

We've got nothing better to do
Than spin some disks and have a couple of brews

All our friends are gonna hang out here tonight

Alright!

We're gonna pass the disks around alright

Tonight!

We've got nothing better to do
Than spin some disks and have a couple of brews

Don't talk about anything else
We don't wanna know!
We're dedicated
To our high-end gear!

We sit glued to the tower speakers all night
And every night!
Why go into the outside world at all?
It's such a fright!

We've got nothing better to do
Than spin some disks and have a couple of brews

Audio rags show what it's really like out there
It's a scare!

You can go out if you want
We wouldn't dare!

We've got nothing better to do
Than spin some disks and have a couple of brews

Don't talk about anything else
We don't wanna know!
We're dedicated
To our living stereo!

I wouldn't be without my turntable for a day
Or even a minute!

Don't even bother to use my brain anymore
There's only music in it!

We've got nothing better to do
Than spin some disks and have a couple of brews

Wait a minute! My turntable doesn't work!
It's broken!
What are we gonna do tonight? This isn't fair!
We're hurtin'

We've got nothing left to do
With no turntable and just a couple of brews

What are we gonna talk about?
I don't know!
We're gonna miss our favorite tunes!
NO VINYL SPINNING TONIGHT!

What do you think?

It was refreshing to see Henry in Stereophile and was the very first article I read. I usually hit the reviews right off the bat.

I agree with just about everything he said, didn't get the impression he was just entering audiophilia, though. He has been at it a little while and has five systems in his home.

I *loved* Henry's two cents. As far as the "implications" of Henry being in Stereophile,  he never lived in hipsterville anyway. I admire his passion and total dedication to whatever he does...and I hope he makes a damned good living doing it. (and in this hobby, he'll have to have a steady paycheck )

What do you think stereophiles choosing him was about?
Not bad or good, just what is the message? I don't mean to start any bashing, just think he is like part of my generation and my music and I always felt so marginalized by the audio industry being into punk/thrash/metal.
Maybe Jello Biaffra will write next month?

Henry is a very passionate audiophile.  We interviewed him about six months ago and I've been talking to him on and off via email for the last two years now.  As the editorial hinted, though he has a good system, he's really more of a record collector/music lover than anything else.  The last time he was in Portland doing his thing he spent about ten minutes talking about buying records and getting "rare pressings" which I thought was pretty cool.

But he's by no means "entering" this hobby. He's been slowly building over the years.

I never know why Stereophile does anything...but having famous people with integrity promote high quality sound playback is a Great idea that I hope develops into a trend. Jack White and Thurston Moore come to mind as good candidates.
