Opeth has a new album coming out in September. Here is a new cut from the album. It's not your normal Opeth!! 100% clean vocals. Sure sounds good!! Enjoy.

not bad - I will definitely give it a try when the whole thing is available - this seems a lot more prog than previous releases

Except for Damnation, which, is one of my favorites from them. I love them all though.

I'm really looking forward to this release!

While I can tolerate their growling vocals, I can not help but think how much more I'd like their CDs with all clean vocals. I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to an Opeth CD because of the growls. Without them, I'd listen to them much more often.

I will be ordering the vinyl version of this!

That's like saying " I like the Oscar Peterson Trio but I'd like them a lot better if that one guy would lay off that damned piano once in a while..." :D

Not at all.

I wouldn't listen to Oscar Peterson if I didn't like his piano playing. The most important thing to the Oscar Peterson Trio is Oscar Peterson.

With regards to Opeth, the most important thing is not their growling vocals. I like everything about  them (their compositions, their musicianship, their lyrics, their clean vocals) except the growling vocals. They don't bother me enough for me to not like the band, only enough for me to know I'd enjoy them more if they didn't use them.

Not to mention that they already released an album with all clean vocals, Damnation. And it was the band that decided not to have any growling vocals on the new one.

Kidding, Simoon. Kidding...
I was just alluding to the fact that many would be of the opinion that the Cookie Monster vocals are as integral to the genre Opeth gets pigeon-holed into as awesome piano playing is to the Oscar Peterson Trio. But Opeth is about defying genres and that's what I like about them so whichever route they choose to pursue is OK by me. I can get dumb metal anywhere. Or bands that emulate Dream Theatre. This stuff is special...
As to Damnation, great record but if someone asked you or I what Opeth sounded like, I don't think either of us would point to Damnation as being the best overall representation of the band's work for the neophyte, would we ? Imagine their surprise when...
See them live if you get the chance!

Blackwater Park is my favorite album.

I do recommend seeing them live if you get a chance...I saw them back in 2005 and it was awesome.  I'm expecting the upcoming concert to be just as good :)

I am one of those that like their music, but don't really care for the growls, so I look forward to this.

If you like Opeth and want to take that sound to the next level of musicianship I suggest a band called The Ocean from Germany. It's all in English, of course.

I own all their albums and honestly it is a few steps above. All their albums are themed and sound different so if you are really interested PM me.

Album's been out for a week and a half now.  No comments?  Very curious to hear what all the Opeth fans think.

I usually let people have their opinions, live and let live, but NO. Absolutely NO. Ocean is very good, but if you think they are a "few steps" above in musicianship you are significantly mistaken.

Akerfeldt is a prodigy. He understands composition and theory as an art form and a science like few others in modern music. No one in metal replicates what he is capable of doing within his compositional structure.

Gaudier or faster drumming does not equate to a jump in "musicianship." MUSIC, the operative word in musicianship, is a measure of compositional skill as well as technicality.

Now, if you appreciate Ocean's music more, that is a different matter all together, and totally cool with me.

In my opinion the album is very very good. It has obviously divided fans. The people who listen to metal music to feel "cool," "badass," "evil," or whatever other adjective that describes a person who defines themselves by the type of music they deem as better, think the album is complete crap. On amazon.com someone said it sounds like "elevator music."

The album is very different from things that they have put out before. A lot of the music is a slow burn, but serves the music on a grander scale.

Songs are dependent on both inter and intra-song dynamics. There are specific movements within each song that serve the music as a complete landscape.

I find the change of pace pretty awesome, and appreciate what Opeth did here.

Watershed IMO was a very weak album overall. Yes, Burden was an awesome song, but a lot of the album felt phoned in to me. Like Akerfeldt was just no longer exciting himself. Definitely one of my least favorite Opeth albums.

This new album sounds like he really was having fun with what he was writing.

I enjoyed the journey. A lot of people might not. The hardest sell of the album is that it really needs to be digested on a whole to be truly appreciated.

Of course, IMHO, YMMW, etc, etc.

I've actually read a very technical piece about how opeth is really not how you put them musically.

I do own all of the Ocean's albums and stand by my statement. Have no particular bias either way.  :thumb:

The album composition is interesting. All of the songs sound very different (in a good way). The best part of the album is it is very well recorded, I have it both on CD and the Super deluxe vinyl box set. This is an excellent demo disc for people's systems that want to showcase a rock album that is both good music as well as excellently recorded.

I've had this album long enough to digest it fully, and I think it is fantastic from beginning to end.

So many great moments. They do that 'dark beauty' thing as well as anyone.

The only track that I'm not entirely enamored with is  Slither.

What does this mean exactly?
