Buddy Rich- technically the best guy ever, 20 years ahead of his time, a perfect example of talent exceeding equipment that was available at the time. I'd bring buddy back just to hear him play Mike Portnoy's kit of today.

Manu Katche
Bill Bruford
Steve Gadd
Jon Christensen
Billy Cobham
Keith Moon- no one has come close to adopting his style, too hazardous for ones health.
The Guy that plays for Dave Matthews Band
The guy that plays for Porcupine Tree
Simon Phillips
I'll remember others as soon as I hit "post".

Well, you have already listed four of mine, eclein, and Devil Doc got some the rest.  Nobody's mentioned Tony Williams, yet, so I will.

I think my favorite rock drummer of the moment would probably be Jean-Paul Gastor from Clutch. He is a rare commodity in hard rock - a drummer who swings. I've seen him live and own most of this band's recorded works & in both cases the two things I always notice about his playing are his tremendous feel and the great drum sound he gets - big, fat and authoritative. Impeccable clock, too.

Another drummer who always stuck in my mind was John English during his stint in Prince's New Power Generation around the time of The Rainbow Children. A living, breathing drum clinic - outstanding technique but by the same token, the kind of drummer who when he hits a tom, the whole kit shifts a little bit. Not a tapper if you know what I mean. I went to see Prince and the NPG in 2002 with a drummer friend I used to play with and he spent the whole night staring at the stage with his mouth open. At the end of the concert, he said " Why the hell do I even bother?" That's the kind of drummer John English was.

Some great names so far, and I'd like to add Aynsley Dunbar to the list.

One could say any drummer who has played with Frank Zappa. If you can read and play his drum scores, your're a damn good drummer.
