Bryston Amp - Test Sheets
« on: 10 Jun 2011, 03:39 pm »
This questions was buried in another thread and didn't get answered so I thought it may make sense to give it it's own thread.  Here it is:

My new 4B-SST2 test sheet results show an RMS power rating into 8 ohms of 330 watts / ch; however, the wattage is quoted as being tested at 2000Hz rather than the typical standard of 20 - 20,000 Hz (full spectrum).

Is anyone aware of why the test report of wattage output is not across the full spectrum 20 to 20,000 Hz.  I'm not doubting that the amp has sufficient power, and I know other things come into play such as current reserves etc. but what I'm struggling with understanding is why 2000 Hz has been picked as the test frequency for Bryston amplifiers and not something broader.  :duh:

The peak power in music is in the mid-range, close to 2KHz, so the amplifier's power output in that frequency range will be pertinent to actual use. However, the power at 20KHz will be similar.

I had the tech check a 4B SST2 and it tested at 340W at 2KHz and a bit above 320W at 20KHz.

Thanks for looking into that James.

May I suggest that that be considered perhaps in future for your testing i.e. that it be across perhaps three key point on the spectrum 20Hz, 2000 Hz and 20kHz.
