My dad has one of those meters I could use--it may actually be at my house now.

The problem isn't an unwillingness to spend a few bucks getting a handle on things, its that learning something new (and foreign) is a whole other variable to try to get a handle on, heh.

If any Long Island acoustic gurus want to donate a couple hours of their time for the cause, I'd love to have 'em over :)

Yeah, it can be a lot of work dialing it in when you start over from scratch.

If you post the results info from the Real Traps tone Cd you'll get plenty of advice.  Post the results and some pictures.

I'm not back to the magic, but I have been making efforts.  Here is what my room looked like last night sounding its best since the new configuration.

VERY quick and dirty bass traps (clothes hamper covered by blanket and high chair w/ cushions under blanket) and a beach towel over my 42 inch LCD.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Would diffusers make sense flanking the TV if I throw a quilt over the flat screen when I want to listen?

I'm thinking bass traps are gonna be needed as well--one which can live in the left corner permanently, but be moved into place quickly on the right when I feel like listening.

Use the SPL meter and test tone Cd and see what (if any) effect your changes had.  You might be  :o

So decided to keep the platforms for the speakers? Helping with the bass?

Try stacking the couch seat/pillow directly behind the speakers, and a couple more towels over the TV.

Jason,

I haven't located the SPL meter yet, but even when I do, I'm not certain I'll understand what its telling me.

Roscoe,

Yeah, bass is improved--tighter and more controlled; impact is similar, but most importantly its less noticeable in the condo below me.

Clark,

I will try that tonight if I have some time.  I've had everything more pushed towards the corners than behind the speakers as is.  I'll have to move the speakers forward to fit couch cushions.

As I've said, you take the measurements and plot them in Excel (or I can do that) and post them and you will get plenty of feedback to help you.

Meant to ask earlier, do you have a copy of Jim Smith's "Get Better Sound"? A great great resource for setting up a room. Jim Smith also has a regular newsletter for folks who purchased his book.

Roscoe,

I just purchased the DVD based on your endorsement.  I'm about to leave town for vacation on Saturday, but it should be here when I get back.  Wish I ordered sooner so I could watch the DVD on my flights!

Hello Gopher,

I'm just reviewing this thread for the first time but I'm glad the GRAMMA is working well for you.  I designed that product (and hold the patent) during my employment at Auralex. Very cool to see your application!

Not fully sure what's been covered or not, but if the topic of measurements is being batted around...go straight to Room EQ Wizzard so that you can get more than just freq response (specifically decay and reflection data).  The freq response is helpful...but not truly revealing toward what is actually going on or what needs to be addressed (or put it this way, it's a lot harder to tell discrete issues from a freq response compared to a waterfall or ETC graph for example).

Hi Jeffrey!

Thanks for chiming in.  I do like what they've done as far as restoring some of the tightness and texture to my low end, though I'm not back where I was in terms of quantity.  My room change is the culprit though.

I think I'm going to suck it up buy a sound level mic and try to figure out this software stuff when I get back from vacation (leaving tomorrow).  Hopefully I'll get much more feedback that way as J has suggested.

I think GRAMMA is one of the cheapest tweak you can improve the sound.  :thumb:

Ya need the disc. The invert polarity switch canot do what the disc does. Ya need the out of phase feed to be played while the system is in phase. Just PM me your info and I'm mailing it to you.

Charles -

I need to begin tuning my room soon, I guess I'll try Master Set.

In meantime, I'll PM my address to you, can I get the disk?

I would agree with Jeff to get Room EQ Wizard. It gives a ton of useful information.

Sorry I've been AWOL on these threads - been out of the country on vacation with limited access.

Good to be back home.
