Just picked up a Marantz 115B AM/FM tuner. The guy was giving it away. I think I'm done, but should be a nice "vintage" Marantz system, even if I just put it on a shelf and look at it.However, the 140's power meters are the cat's meow and it may have to find service from time to time (like on the weekend) just for _hits and giggles. The old Marantz stuff simply doesn't seem to ever break (knock on wood) and the styling is classic. I've owned many pieces over the years including a 3300 preamp, 240 power amp, a 2220B, 2220, 2230, 1530 and the old brute 2385. I also had a 6110 TT and another 105 tuner. For newbies that want to get into some vintage Marantz stuff, my advice is to take your time finding a piece, it will come eventually.Great receivers to buy for efficient speakers (like 88db/m/w) are the 2230, 2250 and 2270. Some fools are trying to sell 2270s for 1K. Just don't buy them, it's too much money. As a general rule, the last 2 digits of a receiver model number where usually the power output per channel. So a 2270 would have 70 watts RMS per channel at a rated harmonic distortion level, with both channels driven. We recently enjoyed matching an old Marantz 2238B with a brand new 100 watt Sony "ES" receiver, and the Marantz killed it in such big ways. Somebody is lying about their power output... Wayner
Hay Wayner, although I have a tuner that Frank upgraded last year for me and the five Dyna FM-3s I have that all have pasted there last electron. I still would like to have a nice vintage tube tuner like a Marantz. What would be one to look for?
My 2270 recently bench tested at 83 wpc @ 8 ohms. It works very well with high efficiency speakers rated at 8 ohms but it really struggles with anything rated at 6 ohms or lower.
