Just picked up a Marantz 3300 preamp!

I  think the price was right. This was perhaps, besides the 7T, one of Marantz's best preamps.

Comments are welcome.

That is a fine preamp. I always thought they were the shit back in the day. A friend of mine had one when I was stationed in Germany many years ago. :thumb:

I used to have one, then sold it to my brother who then gave it away. I guess I've come full circle.  It is what it is. Certainly not up to a AVA Insight+, but that is not the point, it's a classic Marantz and I picked it up for way less then the usual price. I'll find a spot for it.

So now I'm in the hunt for a nice 250 power amp, and perhaps a 114 tuner.

Just picked up a 140 power amp. It came with a wood cabinet, unit was way under priced. I will sell wood cabinet and get the amp for not much.

Just picked up a Marantz 115B AM/FM tuner. The guy was giving it away. I think I'm done, but should be a nice "vintage" Marantz system, even if I just put it on a shelf and look at it.

However, the 140's power meters are the cat's meow and it may have to find service from time to time (like on the weekend) just for _hits and giggles.

The old Marantz stuff simply doesn't seem to ever break (knock on wood) and the styling is classic. I've owned many pieces over the years including a 3300 preamp, 240 power amp, a 2220B, 2220, 2230, 1530 and the old brute 2385. I also had a 6110 TT and another 105 tuner.

For newbies that want to get into some vintage Marantz stuff, my advice is to take your time finding a piece, it will come eventually.

Great receivers to buy for efficient speakers (like 88db/m/w) are the 2230, 2250 and 2270. Some fools are trying to sell 2270s for 1K. Just don't buy them, it's too much money.

As a general rule, the last 2 digits of a receiver model number where usually the power output per channel. So a 2270 would have 70 watts RMS per channel at a rated harmonic distortion level, with both channels driven.

We recently enjoyed matching an old Marantz 2238B with a brand new 100 watt Sony "ES" receiver, and the Marantz killed it in such big ways. Somebody is lying about their power output... :nono:

Hay Wayner, although I have a tuner that Frank upgraded last year for me and the five Dyna FM-3s I have that all have pasted there last electron. I still would like to have a nice vintage tube tuner like a Marantz. What would be one to look for?

Marantz tube tuners are generally big dollars. However, that said, you won't lose money on them (if they work) as they always go up, up, up in value. Here is a link to a Marantz 10B tube tuner...Hold on to your pocket book....http://cgi.ebay.com/Martantz-10b-FM-Tuner-/200610436680?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2eb5505648

Ay Carumba, Wayner !

Very cool !  You know I have the 'jones' for the vintage blue glow !   My 2250b and 5220 are jealous, and I'm drooling. Please post some impressions when you pair this kit with speakers  (Klipsch Heresey's, maybe?) and find a placement.

My 2270 recently bench tested at 83 wpc @ 8 ohms. It works very well with high efficiency speakers rated at 8 ohms but it really struggles with anything rated at 6 ohms or lower.  8)

Mark,

The most desirable one is the 10B, like the one Wayner posted. It will also by far be the most costly. That said, any of the numerous models with the built in scope are quite desirable. The non 10's can all be had for far less than a 10B. Of course, not tubes.

This site has loads of info on all of the vintage Marantz models- tunners, amps, receivers, etc.

http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/mindex.html

Check the 10R and scroll down for the "Broadcast Version." Now that has to be the coolest Marantz tuner ever.

The original "Technics By Panasonic" receivers were no slouches, either. Nice one ya got, Mitsuman.  :thumb:

The 115B tuner arrived today. Totally mint. It's the best piece I've ever seen....looks and sounds like brand new...

Nice to have some vintage gear around again!

Man I love this old Marantz stuff. The 10 was a cost no object product from Marantz. I like that it was produced rom 1964 -1970. I don't think any later tuner lasted that long in production with only one model update. :thumb: Those blue meters are killer! :thumb: Enjoy :thumb:
