Like Cor, I've had them side by side. My opinion differs though. I own Mk3s but the Annies are better to my ears pretty much from top to bottom. The Annies to my ears worked better with a wider range of electronics from Tubes to SS of differing power from 90w to 220 watt amps I have on hand. Sonically I find the top end of the Annies more finely articulated and the bass quicker. There's a bit of a toss up when it comes to the midrange driver. The new AAD unit on the Mk3, while a complete BEAR to beak in is extremely clear sounding. The ones on Annie however are just as articulate but are more fleshed out. It's the difference between pinpoint imaging in free space and pinpoint imaging with a sense of the recording ambience within the spaces.I dunno. If I try to look at it from a price perspective, I'd say they are very close. The differences I mentioned are small ones but to me they are very important. From a musical standpoint however I would say the Annies have it all over my Mk.3s. Here comes the shocker. My main speakers are VR-9s right? Ok. These are basically VR-5 SEs on 'roids. No question about it. Some months back I pulled out a pair of fully broken in SEs as they were replaced by out of the box Annies. As Albert usually does, he had me scratching my head. Remember when I said I could live with Annies? This is why. So if Albert turned the 5 SE which still is a remarkable speaker into an Annie, how do I "Anniversarize" my VR-9s as well as those VR-11s of Jimmy? We'll find out in a few months. Two gentlemen will be coming to Manila.
