Excellent explanation werd!
When it's on ,it's on.. unless it is off because you turned it off, and then it is, in fact, off. Unless it is on. in which case it is on but could have been off, but was not off, but rather on.
In some cases not yet clarified, the amp may be both on and off at the same time.
This situation arises when the 12 volt control cable is in use. If the 12 volt control cable is not in use ,then only the original state of affairs described so very well by werd.
But when the 12 volt cable is in place and affixed (or not affixed) to the preamp, then the situation of the amp being on, and not on at the same time are manifest IF the preamp is muted, or turned off thus the 12 volt control circuit runs the show, and the amp appears off, yet is on, but off on, not off off. And not on on.
When the preamp is switched to active status AND no headphone in the headphone jack, then with the 12 volt connected the amp will revert to on on function. But if the headphones are in the headphone jack, the amp will continue to be in on off status, and removal of the headphone jack is required to achieve on on status of my amp.
I hope this clears up that small issue of being on, not on, or being off but not of, rather off on. or on off depending on your political bent.
