Running Bryston gear for long periods of time
« on: 20 Apr 2011, 03:54 am »
is it ok, to run my Bryston gear, for long periods. :dunno:

have  some, weekend projects, around the house this weekend. and wanted to play my system, while painting and other misc  items.

ok to run system like   5 or 6 hrs non stop  (make  my projects-go by a little smoother)  no worries over overheating?

my gear BP26-4BSST2-BDA1 and cd player

all gear in open rack,  want to be safe.

Thanks

Some people run theirs for 5 or 6 years non-stop.  An argument could be made that powering it off and on is more stressful on circuitry, while another argument could be made that capacitors have only so many thousands of hours of operating life.

I prefer to power down when I'm not around or sleeping, mostly because I don't want to waste several hundred watts of energy per hour.  But the equipment is properly designed to run continuously for as long as you need it to.  Enjoy!

The last record studio I worked in(well, interned) in had a rack of Bryston 4Bs(forget which series). They were on for , oh, Id say at least 18 months before being turned off...and that was ONLY because of a mass power outage.

They were never turned off.

Bryston kicks ass for that reason among many

I routinely run my 4B-ST for 5-8 hours at a time.

It'll max out around 120-125 degrees F on the heatsinks.  A bit warm, but it hangs in there.

Best money ever spent on audio.

I never turn off my two channel anymore.
The video stuff yes i turn it off.
For some parts, like the preamp with a tube phono out i turn on only when i am going to use it. Only because i do not use it much. Though it takes several hours to sound good.
My electrical use for my audio/video stuff is probably $35. a month of electricity. Considering my internet connection is $40 a month, the two channel on all the time is no problem.IMO.

My Bryston gear is on 24/7. No problems over here. It sounds fabulous.

I leave my 7B amps on 24/7.  Maybe I need to shut them down when not being used to conserve energy. They are extremely reliable amplifiers.

My beasties have run for 10 plus hours on numerous occasions with no problems. If I am listening to music that makes them work a little bit, I have an oscillating fan on the floor that I turn on to move the air around my room.

Be well…

One possible problem is the life of the large capacitors in the units. The ones Bryston uses are rated at 105 C, and if they were to run constantly at that temperature, they would only last about 4 months. Bryston has their units go into thermal shutdown at 80 C -- As a rule of thumb, the life doubles for each 10°C lower operating temperature. So running at 80 C constantly, they would last around 1.5 years. But realistically nobody runs their amps right at the threshold of thermal shutdown 24/7. At a constant 45 C, the life is about 15 years.

For more info;

For that reason, I don't leave mine on 24/7.

My amps are on unless i turned em off. I turn them them off when they are not on. some times i leave them off and i think its better they are not on.

All in all they are on unless i turn them off.

Excellent explanation werd!
When it's on ,it's on.. unless it is off because you turned it off, and then it is, in fact, off. Unless it is on.  in which case it is on but could have been off, but was not off, but rather on.
In some cases not yet clarified, the amp may be both on and off at the same time.
This situation arises when the 12 volt control cable is in use. If the 12 volt control cable is not in use ,then only the original state of affairs described so very well by werd.

But when the 12 volt cable is in place and affixed (or not affixed) to the preamp, then the situation of the amp being on, and not on at the same time are manifest IF the preamp is muted, or turned off thus the 12 volt control circuit runs the show, and the amp appears off, yet is on, but off on, not off off. And not on on.
When the preamp is switched to active status AND no headphone in the headphone jack, then with the 12 volt connected the amp will revert to on on function. But if the headphones are in the headphone jack, the amp will continue to be in on off  status, and removal of the headphone jack is required to achieve on on status of my amp.
I hope this clears up that small issue of being on, not on, or being off but not of, rather off on. or on off depending on your political bent.

5/6 hours a day non-stop is nothing for Bryston gears!!!! I leave my amp 10 hrs everyday and not a single problem. I heard that Bryston are designed to operate 25 hrs a day. :thumb:

Running Bryston gear for long periods of time...

...isn't a problem - as long as you hear music.
Otherwise it is simply a waste of energy!  :duh:

Even if there may be some sound improvement , it doesn't  justifiy such an irresponsible waste of resources.

Turn on one hour before listening for your gear to warm up. After that time every component should sound ok - otherwise it is poorly constructed (and we all know this is not the case with Bryston).

The energy thing: I had no children: (deliberately) thus my energy drain on the world ends with my death. Unlike all those who had more human beings, and who children plan on having children ad infinum and who's energy use legacy will outlive them for a very, very long time.
So for those who desire to save the planet: best thing of all, get sterilized.

I adopted, so maybe I’ve reduced my energy use legacy in half?
To answer the OP, shouldn’t be a problem running all day if need be, unless things are really pushed.
In regards to leaving everything turned, my BP25 and 3BST were on constantly 5 for 6 years straight and only got turned off if I had to move them around or change connections.
Now I’ve gotten more conservative with the 4BSST and just turn it on before using, the BP25 and BCD-1 are just put into standby, although I do hear a slight difference after about a half hour or so, not too sure if that’s to be attributed to the electronics, the speakers or my ears.

About 12 years ago I was doing a recording with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown and Jack Renner from Telarc in a recording studio in Toronto called Eastern Sound.

While I was sitting in one studio the owner of the studio came in and asked if I was with Bryston. I said yes... and he said... "please follow me". Gee's I thought what have I screwed up now!  He takes me into another studio and there behind a glass enclosure are 6 Bryston amplifiers with green lights a glowing ... which power the main monitoring speakers in that studio. He says to me "how long do you think those amps have been on?"  I say - a while I hope without any issues.

He says - "18 years"!

I smile. :D
