BDA-1 output voltage
« on: 12 Apr 2011, 04:03 pm »
I've read on Audio Advisor BDA-1 spec sheet that output voltage is 2.3V Unbalanced and 4.6V Balanced. How come a difference in output voltage?

                                            Cheers

Not an engineer but this is a good read - see top of page 6 - http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/sloa054d/sloa054d.pdf

Hi Charlie,

The voltage doubles when you use a Balanced (XLR) output as compared to a single ended output (RCA).

Mr. Tanner:
Here is the dumb question of the day. I'm thinking if I use the Balanced outs to a pre the music will play louder than using the Unbalanced outs to a pre.

                                                      Cheers

Hi Charlie,

There are no dumb questions just dumb answers

Correct if the sending and receiving components are both balanced then you will have 6dB more gain (level).  The Bryston amplifiers have a GAIN control switch on the back though that allows you to reduce that gain by 6dB if you wish.

Mr. Tanner:
Second dumb question of the day. I see that vendors are selling XLR to RCA cables. If I used them would I get the 6db gain even though my pre has Unbalanced inputs only.

                                           Cheers

Hi Charlie,

No - both ends have to be Balanced to get the extra gain.

Mr. Tanner:
Thank you. No more dumb questions today. Maybe tomorrow.

                                           Cheers
