Help me design a new 2ch system...
« on: 29 Mar 2004, 02:19 am »
Hey folks,

I'm in the process of building a new 2Ch system for my home.  I want to stay SS with this new system.  My current system is 2Ch SET and is being moved into my studio.

My foundation for this new system:

BPT BP-2ultra conditioner
ZU cables
Cryotweak silver wires
I'm building a pair of Linus 2 arrays from Selah Audio
Twin front firing Dymax Subs w/ Sonic Craft 12" drivers
Norh CD-1

I want to Bi-amp the Linus2 arrays.  I also plan to use the two subs in stereo.   Does this mean I need 6 monoblocks?  I'm looking for creative budget minded solutions.   I'm not opposed to used gear.  I should also say that I listen to a very ecclectic mix of music and often at fairly high volume levels.

Thanks for any input...
C.

Remind me what the efficieny of the Linus 2 array is?  Pretty high if I remember correctly.  Which is to say that if you choose to go SS with this system, you don't need a lot of watts but the first watt is critical.  If you are handy/DIYer then I would probably look to build gain clone(s).  You can start by looking at a recent thread here in the lab.

If you aren't handy Scott Nixon provides a finished product that is based on similar design.  There are others as well.  These won't cost too much and provide good amplification from what I have read.

I assume you need a preamp too?  IRD Purist is a great choice and even provides two sets of indepently buffered preouts.   You might start by passive biamping and look to active biamping later on, as an upgrade option.   I might even start with just single amping, then passive biamping then active.  For the sub, if it isn't powered then you will need an amp for the subs, which I might look at the pro audio market for inexpensive amplification since it isn't as critical in the sub region.

actually for even more budget minded solutions, check out the threads on the griffin powerwave.  2 channels of amplification for $99 and it supposedly sounds good too.

Josh

thx for the advice.  I do need a pre as well.  The Linus 2 are around 95db.  I would rather go high than low W with my amplification.  I eventually would like to build Seas Excel Arrays which are much lower @ 88db.

I just read the review of the IRD MB-100 amp posted by Earlmarc and think this might fit the bill.

Anyone have input on this amp?  Earlmarc speaks a good word about it.

The IRD-MB100 would work well especially if you are considering purchasing the IRD-Audio Purist preamp. If I were in your shoes, I would strectch my budget and purchase the Odyssey Khartago.
