Aimee Mann - I'm with Stupid

More good stuff from Ms. Mann. In fact this may be my favorite of the 3 discs I have of her's so far.

I'm with Stupid is a fantastic album!  I agree, probably her best (except for the song 'superball').  I've got all of her stuff and I still go back to this album at least every five or six weeks.  I've also got her now out-of-print first solo record Whatever.  It is also very good, but I'm not sure how easy it is to find.

Also check out her husband, Michael Penn's, stuff.  The majority of it is quite good.

Okay, but what's the NAME of her first solo record???Of course it won't be easy to find if we don't the NAME! :D
And, while you're at it, who's on first???

It's called "whatever."  As in, whatever was I thinking by not putting "whatever" in quotes in my other post.

mv,
I think we may have stumbled onto a new variant :D of the Abbott & Costello routine "Who's on First?" Of course, the timing loses something when done over the internet!

Perhaps we can work the bands The Who & The The into the skit as well?

Yep, I can hear it now.....
Costello ; "What band is it that's playing?"
Abbott: "Them."
Costello: "I can SEE that it's them playing, but WHO is it?"
Abbott: "NO, not The Who, it's Them."

Best Buy was having a sale!
Best Buy was having a sale this weekend, and I finally found their SACD section. I bought:
"DOSTM" (Pink Floyd of course)
"So" by Peter Gabriel
"Not All Who Wonder Are Lost" by Chris Thile
"Gold" by Ryan Adams

Three of the discs were $14 and one was $15. This is regular CD money and I didn't have to pay shipping for an order off the 'net.

I've listened to the Peter Gabriel and it's very much better than my original CD, which was bright and brittle sounding. The SACD is still a little bright, but i can listen to it cranked up now, the original was torture to hear loud.

I'm saving each of the others for the rest of the week when I need a musical pickup. Tonight it's baseball though.

As a fan of Nickle Creek, I really enjoyed the Thiles SACD (aside from my disappointment that it's stereo only- the last 2 N.C. discs have superb MC sound... :? ).  Bela Fleck plays on Thiles disc, and it's all instrumental.

The Ryan Adams "Gold" SACD really grew on me after a while.

The Chrystal Method - Tweekend

Got it mainly because I like electronica but have mainly been in to more downtempo, trip hop type sounds.  Figured since I liked their song "Name of the Game", this would be good to pick up.  Overall it's a solid pick.  Next up is a little Fatboy Slim.

2Pac - Greatest Hits

OK, so I'm getting to listen to 2Pac a bit late, this is my first real exposure.  After all the hype, gotta say I'm a bit dissapointed.  I expected something truly unique and for the life of me he sounds like he's ripping Ice Cube's old style, from lyrics, to beats, to delivery.  A let down.

Tyson,

Recommend you try Better Living Through Chemistry, one of FBS's better early albums.  Of course, I think We've Come a Long Way Baby, despite its overpopularity was reall indeed very well written material for this genre.

I have really gotten into more of the loungy, jazzy electronica similar to Kruder and Dorfmeister and one of my favorite picks is the series of Hotel Costes (now 6 volumes).  Each alb is really great, haven't found any of them to be lacking but I still don't have the 4th. To me, its the new jazz.

Thanks for the tip.  Check out "Dummy" from Portishead if you like jazzy electronica - great, great album.

Danny Howells : 24/7

Nick Warren : Reykjavik

Deep Dish : Toronto

All of these arrived....the Deep Dish was not actually Toronto, rather it was the Dubfire after hours followup CD. I bought it after liking the Toronto CD. Deep Dish is not usually my cup of tea, but I kinda liked Toronto, although its very "light" listening....not minimalistic like a Digweed mix.

I can't really comment on the Dubfire mix yet, I haven't really listened to it enough.

Danny Howells disk1 is VERY good. Disk 2 I have yet to make up my mind on. Disk1 is probably good enough to recommend it to others. It's not what I expected, i'll give it that.

Nick Warren disk 2 is also very good. Almost spooky. Haven't given disk1 much of a spin yet. Usually I dislike Nick Warrens stuff and would have never have bought this CD, but I liked the MP3...

So all in all, most CD's are more laid back and easy listening than what I usually buy, but no regrets yet, but only time will tell as many CD's that grew on me quickly also annoyed me after a while.  :o

I bought Patty Griffin's newest "A Kiss in Time" Tuesday when it came out.
It's a live CD from her performance at the Ryman Theater that ended the 1000 Kisses tour. I've gotten several live bootlegs of Patty's work, but the sonics of this one are understandably better. Great thing is that it includes a bonus DVD of interviews,2 videos, some backstage stuff, etc etc and still was just $13.99 for the 2 discs.

Looked for a test CD at Borders on the way home - no such luck

But i did pick up a few CDs  :D

Graham Nash Songs For Survivors
This is supposed to be an excellent recording by Nash of Crosby, Stills & Young fame. Read about this on TNT-audio. Recording techniques are extreme "the music was recorded directly to hard disk, using discreet Class A analog circuitry and that they bypassed as many stages of amplification as possible, whenever possible. They also placed the microphone preamps close to the mic stand, minimizing the length of the low level signal cables". Can't wait to hear this one.

String Cheese Incident  Born on the Wrong Planet
Another one I read about on TNT and also on the nOrh site. "fuses jazz, bluegrass, and world beats into ripe grooves and breezy calypso sounds" Oh joy!

Charlie Byrd Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros
A famous jazz guitarist does brazilian - "Three Note Samba", etc.

If you get the opportunity, see String Cheese live -- far surpasses any recording they've done.  Amazing energy, you can't help but move around.  Have seen plenty of people that looked like they were dragged to shows all of a sudden tapping their feet or goofily dancing around with the remainder of the crowd shortly after the music starts...  Would love to see them at the Wetlands one last time...

Also -- go for the older recordings, I like them a lot better.

Actually bought 15-20 CDs lately, but I keep listening to the same couple, so haven't even gotten to sample the remainder of them...

In the car I've been listening to The Dining Rooms, Tre...  Somewhat loungy electronica kida of stuff -- a few tracks that make for excellent driving music, a few that you start listening to, and two minutes later you wonder how your mind's thoughts drifted off some some where...  Definitely enjoy it with the exception of a couple tracks.

Bought a few albums I'd meant to by for sometime, but that I'd put back at the last minute way too many times.  All I can say is that I wish I hadn't done this, as they are terrific.

The first one I wish, really, really wish I'd bought the first time I saw it, the first time it was mentioned to me, anything -- That is Damien Rice's O.  If you don't own this album, go get it.  If you need a taste, go to Amazon and begin listening to track two, Volcano.  Great music, great instrumentals, great voice, amazing female vocals thrown in..   Last week I was in Cancun for the week and happened to catch him play live on TV for a track, along with Ms. Hannigan (forget her first name) -- amazing.  I will definitely be catching them like in Brooklyn when they play around here soon, and frankly anywhere I can see a performance.

Also got Yo-Yo Ma Brazil -- went and bought it minute I heard the commercial for it.  Still haven't listened to this at home yet, as I can't get myself to take a couple other albums out of rotation.

One of the other albums I keep listening to is Josh Ritter's Hello Starling.  Heard some cuts on 90.7 in NYC quite some time ago, and never picked up the disc.  Good stuff -- again wish I'd picked it up earlier.

Also picked up Belle and Sebastian's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, which I haven't had a chance to listen to yet, but will be seeing them on November 11th...

Tempted to go see Pete Yorn who's playing about three minutes from home next week...

Will mention the remainder of the discs when I get around to them....
