I was finally able to find a local copy of Built To Spill's "Ancient Melodies of the Future"; as this has been compared to Flaming Lips a lot I thought I'd give it a try.

Well, I really like it, but on the basis of just that album I don't think they bear much more than a superficial similarity- mostly the singers are very similar.  Built sounds to me very much like a rock band with rock band influences, much more conventional than the Lips. (Bear in mind I've only heard just this one album).  Certainly the guy's a great guitar player, and "Ancient Melodies of the Future" is a great album.  Not quite as original and inspired as Flaming Lips, but a definate thumbs up.  I'll be picking up some more of their stuff as soon as I can find it.

My comparison was meant mostly as, if you like Lips, you will probably like what Built is going for as they have some similarities in style, however superficial.

I really do like Built To Spill based on that one disc.  Naturally I'd have to try a few more albums but so far I'm a fan.

A Trip to Best Buy and Barnes and Nobile
Before watching the Super Bowl on Sunday I popped into Best Buy and got the following SACDs:

James Taylor "Hourglass"
Jim Hall Quartet "All Across the City"
Colin Linden "Big Mouth"

Then I went next door to BN and got:

Richard Thompson "The Old Kit Bag"

The Richard Thompson disc is good, but not the best sound he's ever had on CD. I also think some of the guitar playing has gotten a little derivitive (for him), but perhaps I'll feel differently on repeated listening.

The Jim Hall disc is wonderful, great playing and very nice sound. The piano and cymbals seem a trifle bright, but only a trifle.

I only put the Colin Linden disc in for long enough to determine that both the SACD and CD layers played, and I listened to the first track on the SACD layer. The recording quality is quite good, with a warm and layered presentation of his voice and electric guitar. I think this will be a nice addition to my blues collection.

I haven't listened to the JT Hourglass disc yet, i have it on CD and liked that, so I'll listen to the other SACDs all the way through before putting this one in the player.

I finally got tired of waiting for BB to get it in, so I ordered a couple DVD-A's from Amusicdirect.com:  Donald Fagen- Kamakira & Zephyr's Voices Unbound.  The latter is one of the only discs to get a "10" rating for sonics from TAS, so I'm anxious to hear it.

Max,

Here is a link to the Radiohead import. . .

I heard it a long time ago. . .I haven't listened to it since I bought it, though.

http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=1547256

The date on the link says 1999. . .likely a reissue, I guess, b/c mine is dated 1994 & 1993.

Sa-Dono--good to see you ordered "Fairy Tales" by Radka Toneff. I know that you enjoyed it when you heard it at my house.

Did you get the new Nora Jones album?

oneobygyn:

Yes, I did enjoy Radka Toneff. It was rather difficult to find the album, and I ended up having to special order it. Hopefully they'll be able to obtain it, or I will have to look elsewhere.

I bought the new Norah Jones album the first day it released :D I am liking the music....but have not done any critical listening, as my DAC is still in the shop. It is just not the same listening to music without it.

Also, you should check out Polytown. More of the brilliance of Bozzio. Many even consider it a better album than BLS. If you want to hear it first, I'll bring it by next time.

I think I purchased more than 60 albs in the last two months.  @ 50 cds, @ dozen or so LPs.   Just getting some time to go through them all, which is quite fun.

Ryan Adams - Rock n Roll LP :: good, verdict is still out as it didn't totally grab me
Electric Six - Fire LP :: pretty f***in cool if you ask me.  Weird as hell though
The Thrills LP :: not sure what to make of this one yet
