I always felt that Blackmore's riff to "Smoke On the Water" was akin to Beethoven's fifth in terms of being instantly recognizable.

4 - Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
3 - Iron Man - Black Sabbath

I don't aree with the order, and felt some stuff should be there and others stuff shouldn't. So does everyone. To me, these lists are nothing more than a way to look into stuff I haven't heard or overlooked.

I agree and if your going to include IRON MAN you may as well include AQUALUNG:

But a big missing riff (actually complete song) is:

Alvin Lee doing "I'm Going Home"

I think Lee is worthy of being placed amongst, Clapton, Hendrix, West, Van Halen, Betts, Allman,Vaughan et al. (is SRV even mentioned? or is he Blues?)

The above linked video is from the Woodstock era and one of the best things to a guitar riff is to be able to see the axeman's face while he is slammin.

This is one of my favorite Guitar Youtubes.

Gotta love articles like this since they allow you to reflect on some of these great performances.

I think it's been said earlier that any list is going to leave something off. Eric Clapton has called Jerry Miller the best guitarist ever. Here is some info about Jerry - http://www.myspace.com/mobygrapesjerrymiller

LW, Thanks for bringing those back out of the shadows.

I mean that "riff" with the bassist shows some of the freaky jammin these guys were capable of. And I don't know who that bassist was, but man, he is of the same freaky good cloth.

Lee and the other members of 10 Years After were really representative of the Bluesy Rock stars of the time.

Thanks for posting these, now I'll have to break out the Vinyl of those two to listen again (if there is anything left in those ancient grooves

)

They always put on a great show John....Woodstock - Fillmore East - and a few other shows that I attended.

Alvin is now a solo act.....

It seems like a reasonable list, since they seem to be trying to span genres, and not repeat people too much (Led Zep, AC/DC, & Joe Walsh could each have a ton) - I'd probably add these, since the riff is pretty much the whole song:

25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago
Sweet Jane - Velvet Underground/Lou Reed
Louie Louie - The Kingsmen
Little Willy - Sweet (Although they've got a ton too.)

Here's some more of old Flash Fingers - Alvin is really an overlooked guitarist.
I saw him live at a small college in South Jersey back in the 1980s with Ten Years Later and he was just astonishing. His style is so fluid and he makes it look so effortless.
