Would Linc Wray's Rumble qualify?

Perhaps Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser or the Venture's Telstar?

Just Asking.

Any list of the 'best' will piss of somebody. I thought it was a fun read, and having the tracks to sample was cool. Thanks for the link Chris.

Hard to believe the 50 greatest Rock guitar riffs don't include Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc.? I guess we should forget about that 'old' stuff, huh? :?

I always felt that Blackmore's riff to "Smoke On the Water" was akin to Beethoven's fifth in terms of being instantly recognizable. :)

Not to sound like a jerk, but did you read the list?

17 - Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
4 - Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
3 - Iron Man - Black Sabbath

I don't aree with the order, and felt some stuff should be there and others stuff shouldn't.  So does everyone.  To me, these lists are nothing more than a way to look into stuff I haven't heard or overlooked.

+1, Stu. Utterly subjective but great food for thought and/or conversation.

I agree and if your going to include IRON MAN you may as well include AQUALUNG:

But a big missing riff (actually complete song) is:

Alvin Lee doing "I'm Going Home"

I think Lee is worthy of being placed amongst, Clapton, Hendrix, West, Van Halen, Betts, Allman,Vaughan et al. (is SRV even mentioned? or is he Blues?)

The above linked video is from the Woodstock era and one of the best things to a guitar riff is to be able to see the axeman's face while he is slammin.

This is one of my favorite Guitar Youtubes.

Gotta love articles like this since they allow you to reflect on some of these great performances.

Are you actually thinking about Slash's solo ? That would be a whole other thing ( and an interesting topic for connoiseurs of that particular black art ).

I think it's been said earlier that any list is going to leave something off.  Eric Clapton has called Jerry Miller the best guitarist ever.  Here is some info about Jerry - http://www.myspace.com/mobygrapesjerrymiller

He plays with the Eilen Jewell band as well now (and I'll be catching them again this Friday) and is fantastic.  Here is one of their covers of something vintage - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyMvg4Y1eWs&feature=related

Speaking of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After.....

Two excellent examples of "riff" based tunes....

Good Morning Little School Girl....

Love Like A Man.....

I use to play both those tunes....way back when..... :guitar:

LW, Thanks for bringing those back out of the shadows.

I mean that "riff" with the bassist shows some of the freaky jammin these guys were capable of.  And I don't know who that bassist was, but man, he is of the same freaky good cloth.

Lee and the other members of 10 Years After were really representative of the Bluesy Rock stars of the time.

Thanks for posting these, now I'll have to break out the Vinyl of those two to listen again (if there is anything left in those ancient grooves )

Ten Years After....

Alvin Lee – guitar, vocals, harp; born Graham Barnes, 19 December 1944, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.
Leo Lyons – bass; born David William Lyons, 30 November 1943, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
Chick Churchill – keyboards; born Michael George Churchill, 2 January 1946, Mold, Flintshire, North Wales.
Ric Lee – drums; born Richard Lee, 20 October 1945, Cannock, Staffordshire.

They always put on a great show John....Woodstock - Fillmore East - and a few other shows that I attended.

Alvin is now a solo act..... :guitar:

Their very first album....before taking off....

More of a jazz/blues style....then they started to ROCK...

It seems like a reasonable list, since they seem to be trying to span genres, and not repeat people too much  (Led Zep, AC/DC, & Joe Walsh could each have a ton) -  I'd probably add these, since the riff is pretty much the whole song:

25 or 6 to 4  -  Chicago
Sweet Jane  -  Velvet Underground/Lou Reed
Louie Louie  -  The Kingsmen
Little Willy  -  Sweet  (Although they've got a ton too.)
Up Around the Bend  -  CCR
Takin' Care of Business  -  BTO
Do Ya  -  The Move/ELO

Here's some more of old Flash Fingers - Alvin is really an overlooked guitarist.
I saw him live at a small college in South Jersey back in the 1980s with Ten Years Later and he was just astonishing.  His style is so fluid and he makes it look so effortless.

For riffs, Zappa's Muffin Man is pretty catchy.  This is from the DVD Baby Snakes and I'm afraid I'm actually on film in the early minutes of it.
