What about a JLTi phono???
Many dissatisfied owners of Chinese gear. It might be no big deal if a toaster stops working, but if you paid good money for a component.....neo
LOL, Sorry, forgot you're the OP. I think the JLTI is around $2600.
LOL, Sorry, forgot you're the OP. I think the JLTI is around $2600. From what I've read, the Jasmine & Nighthawk are the ones to check out. Some people say the Jasmine is significantly better. I'm sure there are those who prefer the Nighthawk. But that's reading, not listening. The problem is that both are sold direct, AFAIK. They prob have a trial period - returnable if not satisfied. There are threads on Asylum and I think Karma, that discuss the Jasmine & Nighthawk if you want more opinions from actual users. I read a couple of posts where people switched from one to the other. I never owned or heard either.Maybe you should consider the Pioneer as well. From what John says though, the MC stage isn't that great. The Pioneer could also drive a second system somewhere in the house. Depends on what you're looking for. John, I saw a pic of the Nighthawk with the top off. I saw the ICs and assumed that was what you were talking about. Although the headphone amp may have op amps, it doesn't mean the phono pre also has. Drive requirements are very different. There's no spkr load on a phono pre. I'd keep an open mind. The Nighthawk is said to have great bass and not be overly bright. Jasmine is Chinese and it seems like they got this one right. BTW I think this is the 2nd or 3rd version. Very tough to compete when they get it right, which is rarer then you might think. Many dissatisfied owners of Chinese gear. Someone PM'd me selling one at a more realistic price...Any experience with it???
Does anyone know what the output impedance of the Jasmine LP 2.0SE is? My preamp is a passive, would like to know if it would be a match.
Audio Revelation is selling a MK3i version (w/o external ps) for $1695 on AudiogoN. Even if Chinese gear sounds good, I still have a "problem" buying anything from a country that refuses to value its currency relative to the dollar, which amounts to "currency manipulation"! So while the Chinese gear may be cheap, us audiophools are supporting this practice and helping China build up its trade surplus to boot! I ended up keeping the Nighthawk, not only for its sound, but also because it is made in the USA. I have never heard the Jasmine and I would not buy one even if sounded like angels singing, but that's just me. And now, I shall get of my soap box.
A slightly different perspective from over the pond.I spent quite a bit of time comparing some highly repsected units around this sort of budget covering MM/MI/HOMC and LOMC basesTrichord DinoPro-ject Phonobox SEIIDynavector P75I ended up with the Project, it really shone through in this mix and for me remains a true bargain in the world of vinyl.CheersDave
Scary isn't it? National debt 14 trillion and climbing. I wonder when the interest will be too much to pay. Well, not really, most of the time I try not to think about it. A friend was over the other night and told me he saw a show about it. Apparently they built the largest container ship in the world. I guess this thing is like a supertanker. But it can do 25 knots. All it does is load up and go to CA, exclusively to supply Walmart. It takes a couple of days to unload then heads back to China - empty. Guess another preamp won't make much difference.neo
Delta WaveIn some respects the Ortofon X5-MC is the best moving whatever cartridge I have ever heard. The earlier ones had much lower mass cantilevers and are reported to be the best of the bunch. I have one of the later examples - with a heavy, honkin' pipe that hurts the cause. It tracks fair-to-poor the way I have it and the bass is too tepid to be taken seriously much of the time. But lord, is it ever smooth and wonderfully extended in (treble) sonics. I keep thinking about sending away to Mr. van den Hul for a re-tip to see how far the breed can be taken John
Sounds like an urban legend to me (not the deficit, which is all too real, unfortunately )The berths to unload containers at US ports are sized to accommodate only the largest current ones available - 45 footers they are referred to. No special berths at US Ports could be economically built for only Walmart.Walmart/Sam's normally order via 40HQ containers (which are 40' long containers with an extra several inches height inside the container)John
John,I think you should go for it and let me know how it works out, mine is getting up there in hours. I must have an older one, I've never had any tracking issues, even on a few warped records. The bass is fast and deep. I also built my arm from parts and know exactly how dialed-in it is. I can't really see spending $$$$ on an upgrade although I am curious about the Grado Master and the Benz Glider, just to compare. I've been extremely happy with it thus far. Just playing the MoFi Beck "Sea Change" always puts a ginormous grin on my face. -David
What kind of mass are you running on that arm you built?
It's definitely on the medium side... The arm tube is a heavier SS from an earlier 3009. The headshell is a Micro Seiki. The weight is a standard 110g. I'm using a light, 4g Project anti-skate weight. It's hard-wired w/ Cardas from headshell connector to RCA.
