True Grit

My son and I went to the movies and watched True Grit yesterday. John Wayne won a Oscar for his performance as Rooster Cogburn in the original True Grit. Jeff Bridges, IMHO, gave an Oscar Winning performance as Rooster in this modern version of the film. The Coen Brothers did a wonderful job with this movie and typical of their movies, at least for me, the ending is not the greatest. However, other than what I thought was not a good ending the movie just flew by and was very enjoyable. My rating 4.0 out of 5 stars.

I saw it yesterday and liked it but I thought Matt Damon was sort of mis-cast in his role.

My wife and I saw this today and we both enjoyed it very much. As usual the Coen Brothers use of language was very distinctive and added a great deal to the film IMO. I'd go 4 out of 5 stars as well.

I had planned on passing this movie up mainly cuz of the amount of times I've actually watched John Wayne's True Grit my whole life. But all these high ratings has me reconsidering. Plus I am a big fan of Jeff Bridges. Maybe I can find an afternoon next week w/o a college Bowl game on.

I saw it today and took my three grandsons. I thoroughly enjoyed it but they had trouble with the language. I leaned over and asked the 13 year-old if he understood what they were talking about and he said "not always." He missed the verbal sparring between Maddie and LeBeuf.
Wednesday night I watched the original with John Wayne. Some of the scenes and dialog were nearly identical.

Probably, Robin, Bridges is the one (perhaps only) reason for seeing it. He'll probably cop another Oscar nomination at least. Win? Likely will be Firth's year. The little gal, OK too. Outside of that, blasse IMHO. Not an exemplary Coen'er.

I didn't even recognize Matt Damon and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I missed half the dialogue, myself. Will want to watch it again with subtitles.

As we were leaving the theater my youngest grandson looked up at one of the posters for the movie. He saw Matt Damon's name and said he did not see MD in the movie. I told him MD was LeBeuf. Not sure he believed me.

The book is quite a bit "grittier" that the original movie, I would hope the Coen bros hew a little tighter to the book in this remake. I've read some reports this is true as the scenery is closer to Fort Smith (instead of the Rockies) and the trio's subsequent pursuit of Chaney into Oklahoma, then known as "Indian Territory". I hope the new movie treats Mattie Ross as the heroine she is in the book, not a vehicle for John Wayne, or Jeff Bridges, to be another cardboard star, it would be so much richer for it.

The trailer looks interesting. I've had some resistance to the new version of True Grit because I saw the original with my grandmother at Radio City Music Hall and have a fond memory of that day. I'll probably wait until it comes out on video, which is what I do for every movie I see these days. lol

Though I haven't read the books or seen the original movie, I would say she's very much a heroine. Very good movie, just don't go in expecting A Serious Man or even No Country - and if the trailer for the '69 is any indication, I might venture that it's has a little bit more bite. The trailers give a good taste.

Levi and I saw the movie today, and thought it was excellent. I never saw the original movie, nor read the book, but I thought the Coen brothers did an excellent job of presenting the 19th century west truthfully in speech and detail. I don't like hollywood westerns, but do like realistic westerns. Of those that I've seen, Open Range, Appaloosa, The Assassination of Jesse James... and the HBO series, Deadwood stand out as excellent representations of the western. I give True Grit 4.5 out of 5 stars. Jeff Bridges and especially Hailee Steinfeld were excellent.

Saw it last night. Really good. Bridges is outstanding. It's a very slim movie. Just a couple of actors really. It's amazing it's as riveting as it is with not whole lot of stuff going on. I wouldn't put alongside the Coens' best films, but it shows that they sure as heck are some of the best filmmakers alive (or ever, really).

Special kudos to Barry Pepper. This guy just doesn't seem to get big roles even with his good looks, but every time he manages to give a hell of a performance (He actually made Battlefield Earth bearable. Just barely.) In True Grit he has hands down the worst teeth ever in a motion picture. He's almost unrecognizable.

I really need to get out and see this movie.

Maybe next week if it's still out there,,,, Bridges was also great in TRON.

True Grit was truly good, so was Tron.
