RM30's arrive . . . well some of them
« on: 13 Mar 2004, 01:54 am »
I got two packages this afternoon from UPS.  Two RM30M's, but without the bases.  The bases arrived late in the afternoon.  I am still missing my RM30C for my horizontal center channel.  Hopefully on Monday?

Of course, I set them up and tried them right away.  WOW!  That is all I could say.  Compared to my 626R's (totally stock), which I really like, these just do everything much better.  Strong tight bass, clear detailed midrange and highs I have never heard before.  And the imaging, amazing.  Wide, deep soundstage and 3D imaging.  And, of course, the speaker disappear.  The reference CD I used to check the sound allowed me to hear all the main things I look for, but tellingly, I found myself drawn into the music so much that I had to go back to certain sections I use because I forgot to listen critically.  Involving, I guess you would say.

This is all without any adjustment, positioning or tweaking.  I can only imagine what they will be like when they break in and I spend some time adjusting them.

Visually, they are beautiful.  The Piano black is excellent, and with the grills on, I predict will have a very high WAF.  Note the reflections in the photos - literally mirror finishes.

I also tried a DVD to see how they worked in 7.1 mode.  I tried a bit of LOTR and the detail, clarity and highs were so much better than before that they almost overwhelmed the center speaker.  I am currently using a BG 220DX for a center.  I can't wait until the RM30C gets here to have that same clear sound from the center.

Here are a couple of quck pix:

These are fabulous speakers.  The sound is substantially better in almost every aspect than the Audio Physic Libra's I had previously, which where more than twice the price.

Many thanks to John Casler for his assistance and patient, knowledgeable responses to my many inquiries.  As my grandchildren would say "You rock John!"

Sorry, I have to go now and get imersed in an orchestra.

Very cool, they look really, really nice in piano black!

Do you have any putty adjustments w/ the PRs in the RM-30? There's 2 6.5" passives down there, right? Is just one mass loaded, both or neither?

thanks

How is the RM30 center going to be configured?  The same as the vertical model but without the base plate, or will the tweeter be repositioned for a more center placement?

Like the looks of the piano black.  Very nice looking.

Rick,

Great to here, they are finally here to hear

The first wave of RM30s is now reaching the new owners and I trust most will find, as you have, that this speaker when set up in their listening environment is a real winner.

As always, please know it was my pleasure and thanks for your patience (and continuing patience, as you wait for the RM30C)

Both of the PR's have putty to play with on the RM30M.  I believe the RM30C set up for horizonatal use will have the same configuration of drivers, except the tweeter will will be rotated 90 degrees.  I should be able to confirm that on Monday when it gets delivered.

WAF flash - This morning as we were having coffee, my wife took a good look at the RM30M's and said "These are really nice looking."  Then she fell to the floor, mocking a faint.  "I can't believe I actually like them", she said.  This is absolutely a first.  She has never liked the looks of any speaker I have had before.  When I told her the BG 220DX on top of the TV would be replaced by another one of these, she said "Great!  Then you will be done with replacing speakers for a while?".  "Yes dear, except maybe the rear surrounds."

I've found that finding a woman of the same religion is the most important thing.  As long as she worships you as god, things should be fine.

Looking forward to pics of the RM30C positioned horizontally.  Enjoy.

I got my RM30 center today

I received my RM30 C (horizontal) TRT, FST today.

First, the looks of the Piano Black are really really nice!  The looks of the RM30 are nicer than the RM2 or RM40's IMO.

It is by far the nicest looking florstander except the RM/X that VMPS makes.

The FST was rotated 90* for my horizontal positioning, and the bottom of the speaker doesn't have the usual base, but the speaker is a perfect rectangle and there is a slot for the two passives.  I can't say enough about how good it looks.

So far I have run through most of Eagles HFO concert, some songs from John Fogerty -Premonition, Steely Dan - Two Against Nature and Music For Montserat.

I was looking for how seemlessly it matched up to my TRT'd FST'd RM40's, and how well it convinced me that when a singer sang, the sound came from his mouth and not the speaker, or when a guitar was strummed, I beleived it came from the guitar, and not the speaker.

I have to say that it has matched up totally seemlessly with the RM40's

Almost all the time I could beleive that what I heard came from the screen.  The few times I didn't it had always been that way on every system I tried that cut of the DVD on.

I can't tell you guys how happy I am with the all VMPS HT I now have.

I will try to answer any questions you guys might have.

Special thanks to Wayne at Bolder Cables for all his help.

I took some but they came out too dark.  All I have is a digital camcorder

I have emailed them to my work.  Tomorrow I will try to lighten the pictures so you can make out the speakers.  If it works out, I will post them.

I don't have that technology at home.

Marbles,
What is different about your RM-30C from a stock one (i.e 90 degree FST, slots instead of full driver holes,?)?  Did Brian do the customizing?  I am awaiting my RM/X's (any day now, according to the Big Man) and am looking for a seamless center channel...and no, my wife would kill me if I asked Brian to customize a horizontal RM/X.....cool idea, though, now that I think about it.... :D
Thanks,
Ted_B
P.S.  Did you XO the RM-30 at 80 hz like planned, or running it full-range?

I have gone back and forth on whether I should get a center...

I have been running in phantom mode and to be honest things sound pretty darn good.  Since I don't have an RPTV, wall unit, etc... in between the speakers, I am not sure I need a center.

I think the oney would be better spent in my system on getting a sub.

Hope the pics come out.

Ted, the only difference would be that the FST is turned and the base is just a tad different.  In my case, instead of being on the bottom of the cabinet and sticking out slightly, it is between the slot so the cabinet  makes a perfect rectangle.  Hard to explain but beautiful to see.

Zybar, a sub (or two) is awfully important to a decent HT setup.  If you don't think you need a center channel, get the sub.

Pictures are up in my gallery, but they are not very good.

If anyone wants to clean them up a bit, help yourself.

Ted b, sorry didn't see your question about XO.

I am currently XO'ing the RM30 and 626's at 50hz and running the 40's full range.

Tonight I tried some real movies, as apposed to concert DVD's.

First up was Toy Story 2.  I watched the first few scenes.  Sometimes I thought the dialog cam efrom their mouths and sometimes I didn't.  I'm sure I was more sensitive to it as This is what I'm looking for.

Next up was the Matrix (first one).  I'm still watching it...I am totally sucked in to the movie.  The words come from the actors mouths.

It seems that it is movie dependant wether the words come from the center speaker or the actors mouths and I'm not sure why.

The blending of the RM40 to the RM30 is PERFECT.

Just watched the first few scenes of MIB II.

Laughing my ass off...oh and the voices are coming from the actors mouths...
