US and European Turntable Manufacturers
« on: 10 Dec 2010, 01:07 am »
I've been rather hesitant to post this as I'm not looking to start a big flame war but I can't find much information on this subject.
Which turntables are actually made here in the US or Europe?
I'm looking for a second table with something comprable in performance to my Well Tempered Classic.
I will probably have to go used as my tastes outstrip my bank account.
VPI springs to mind, of course.

Hey!

Hmmm... not sure but I think SOTA also made here in the US.

Well, most of turntables are made in Europe these days.

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I assume you are referring to a desire to buy American.  Since you are buying used, it doesn't matter.  The dollars sent to foreign interests have already been spent, and money spent on used items only benefits the US economy internally and has no bearing on international trade.

But for US manufacturers using US real estate and US workers to assemble, I think it's Sota, Walker, and VPI.  There's Stanton, Newmark, and others that have stuff made offshore, so they don't count, I assume that's your rules.

I think Basis and Teres are US companies. Oracle is Canadian. Hope you have deep pockets.
Sota has a couple of less expensive models. I've never heard one, but they seem fairly popular. Sota is known mostly for their vacuum hold-down models and the Sapphire - named for the bearing material.

I forgot Merrill, which is now Merrill-Scillia. George Merrill made the classic Heirloom TT.

BTW, he has a record cleaning system using your sink, w/o using a vacuum. He thinks vacuums might harm record grooves.
