RM40 TRT upgrade?
« on: 19 Nov 2010, 09:31 pm »
Hi I'm new to AC and VMPS.  I just had the good fortune of purchasing a used pair of RM40's with upgraded FST tweeters and midbass at an excellent price.  My question is about the TRT cap upgrade.  The serial number on the speakers end with TRT, so does this mean that these have the TRT upgrade?  The previous owner owned two pairs of these and had the TRT upgrade on his other pair.  He said that he couldn't tell the difference in sound between the two.  He didn't think that these had the TRT upgrade but wasn't sure since he had bought them used a few years ago as well.  Thanks for your help.

Take off the woofer and look inside at the crossover. You never know what you're getting for sure 2nd hand unless you verify with your own eyes.

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the VMPS owners club :thumb:

Brian can tell you if the Serial # designation means TRT caps or not.

Generally however one can tell the difference in the three cap sets available as the sound just gets better in most all qualities the better the cap set.

However, if you don't have system components or a room that allows you to hear subtle detail and improvements, it might be more difficult to hear the differences.

The good news is that the "stock" cap sound absolutley great.  However the Auricaps and the TRTs just build on that sonic signature.

If you do as Pez suggests, and the caps look HUGE (like 1/4 sticks of Dynamite) then they are likely TRT (strangely enough I think the full name is TRT DynamiCap and many call them TNT Dynamite caps )

Woodsyi has a pic in his Gallery (which I can't post for some reason)

Thanks all for the quick and informative replies.  I'm a little reluctant to remove the driver but I'll look into it.

Why? Nothing in there will bite you, unless a woofer troll made its way into your speaker, then you might actually need a quarter stick of TNT.

just take the screws off with an electric drill. When you put them back on use the electric to get the screws in most of the way then hand tighten them down so as to not over do it. Easy.

FYI

TRT stands for "Tomorrows Research Today".

Hmmm.... it would be quite peculiar to add "TRT" to the serial number if the speakers didn't have the upgraded caps.

To the OP: I'd be a bit reluctant to remove one of the drivers in high end speakers, as well. I'm sure those drivers are sealed. Plus, if you don't try it, there's zero chance of screwing something up, i.e., the screwdriver slipping and accidentally puncturing the driver.

"TRT" after the serial number does indeed mean the crossover is all TRT caps.

Thanks for the definitive answer Brian.  This means I got a better deal than I thought.  These speakers are simply amazing.  I'm currently driving them with a Marsh A400S and Y.S. Audio Experience Balanced A2 preamp.  Sourced with lossless files through Sonos with MHDT Havana DAC.
