PROJECT/one DR-220 turntable (AKA CEC BD-3200)
« on: 15 Nov 2010, 06:47 pm »
I picked up a PROJECT/one DR-220 turntable at the Goodwill for 7 USD this weekend.   I couldn’t resist as the dust cover only has a few light scratches which indicate to me this table is a survivor.  Inside and out the unit is fairly clean.  The belt needs replacing as it has deteriorated and turned to mush and the turntable needs a basic tune-up.  The needle and cartridge (QLM 34 MK III) likely also need replacing.  My only concern is that the unit has an AC motor with no speed control.  Is there anyway to fine adjust the speed?  This unit is made in Japan and is a rebadged CEC BD-3200 I believe.   Does anyone have experience with these tables?  I’ve done some research on the internet and there really isn’t that much out there other than a few threads on other forums.
Thanks,
Brad

Here is a quick update.
I bought a flat belt 23.6"x0.02"x0.25" that works well.  The motor is a AC-synchronous type so no speed adjustment is needed.  The speed was checked with a strobe and it is running at 33 1/3 exactly.  I replaced the needle on the QLM 34 MK III cartridge and it is also working well.  I gave it a good cleaning and re-greased the moving mechanisms.   So far I am into this turntable 22.00 USD.  Since I only spin vinyl occasionally this table fits my budget.  :P

Your missing a side weight. See my tonearm and notice the barrel weight on the horizontal pin.

Thanks Wayner!!
That explains the sensitive skating problem.   I guess it is off to the machine shop to try to make one.  Do you know what mass (or weight) I should target?

Mine, off of a Rega R200 arm is 20.5 grams, and measures .50" dia. X .75" long. It's made out of brass and then plated. The hole is about 1/4" down from the top with the #4 set screw coming in perpendicular to the hole on the side.

If I had an extra one, I'd give it to ya.

Thanks for the information Wayner.  It will be a test of my machining skills but hopefully it is something I can do on my lunch hour (one cut, two holes and a tap).   The finished product won’t be pretty and plated however.  The tone arm itself is an old Jelco and likely impossible to get parts for.

Jelco built my Rega R200 and I thought that might be the case. In that event, I think the weights should be the same. You'll find out after you make yours. The instructions say the weight is suppose to be straight up and down with 1/32" of the horizontal pin sticking out of the weight.

Interesting.  I can see a wear mark on the horizontal cantilevered shaft approximately 0.53” (½” (weight diameter) + 1/32”) from the free end.  This confirms to me that the weight should in fact have a ½” diameter and likely be the same as the Rega R200 as you stated.  The horizontal shaft diameter is approximately 0.08” (2mm), I am assuming this dimension is also the same on the Rega R200.

The lateral weight that is missing does indeed work similar to a bias weight or spring.  Which of course can give similar issues as skating, or influence them.
To properly set the position of the weight, you need to know the arm off-set angle.  After that, it's an easy walk through.

A design change is needed on that lateral weight.  I found a few images online detailing the OEM weight, and as you can see it is different then the one on the Rega R200.  It is good however as the OEM design should be simpler to make.  I just wish I knew how many grams it was.  The image also details a countersink in the weight whose depth is unknown.  I will make a few of them and chose the one that works best.

So the end of the horizontal shaft is threaded?

Nope, the shaft is not threaded.  It is smooth to the end.  I was just going to use a set screw.  You can see there is a machined index mark on the shaft, I guess this gives you a good starting point for the adjustment?

Here is the new lateral weight.  It is brass stock with a length of 0.600" and a diameter of 0.500".  I added a countersink on each side with a diameter 0.375" and a depth of 0.100" and drilled a 0.082" diameter hole through the entire weight.  The weight is secured with a set screw that is located 0.300" from each end.  The weight is around 12 grams.  I still have to make some skating and alignment adjustments before I start spinning vinyl.  I will let you know how it goes.  Thanks again for all the help.

It has been a while and the turntable still works great. Today on my lunch hour I decided to reproduce the Rega R200 arm weight that Wayner had mentioned.  The final mass was 20.1 grams.  Not sure if it will make any difference but it is just something I had to try.  This is fun.

I have this exact turntable. Have you replaced the needle? Where did you find one?

After getting a few PM from people I just would like to add to this thread that this table uses a 23.6"x0.02"x0.25" flat belt.  I bought a replacement belt at MCM electronics (part # 42-650) for about 5 dollars.  They also have a replacement needle (part # 40-700) for around 12 dollars.
