Internet over power lines in the house?
« on: 14 Nov 2010, 05:55 pm »
I was not sure where to post this question but I thought this is where the computer gurus hang out.

Any experience with http://www.plasternetworks.com/ or a similar product to deliver internet via a home's electrical wiring?  I need two runs of CAT5e from my router to my listening room and really don't want to climb in my attic if I can avoid it.

I have been considering these as I live in a rental and cannot run cables.  If I owned the home I would not even consider them - I'd just run CAT6 and be done with it.

Google a little on Homeplug or Ethernet over Power
A lot of companies offer this type of products like Devolo, D-link, etc
Used it for a year.
More stable and faster  then the WiFi-g  but not as fast as a Cat5e.
In the end I took the drill and made a wired connection.

I have been successfully using the Linksys PLE200 ethernet over powerline adaptor for my music streaming system for YEARS.  It has had no problems with any music data stream (including 24/96) since it was installed.

Icrim, No need to be so terse.  I did use the search function first.  I always do.  But if you don't know the magic words to use the results are not useful and frequently strange. The search function on this site is not its best feature.  I recently tried to find a post where I offered an item for sale. The search function produced zero results searching the brand name so I went to my posts and scrolled until I found it. For the current topic,  I got a lot of unrelated search results.

Thank you for the link.

I have used it to go from my home office to family room using Netgear's ethernet over power adapters for PS3 and Squeezebox.  Did not have any problems using it and performance was good.  If your connections goes across a breaker your performance is likely to suffer.

I'm currently using 3 delivery options - ethernet, wireless and Netgear Powerline.

For all the right reasons ethernet is the first choice, but I've found Powerline to be a great solution also.  All the theorists who argue that Powerline puts noise in the line that negatively impacts audio performance are the ones that haven't tried it, I've had no problems with it and can thoroughly recommend it.

I bought Netgear refurbs from EBay.
