Lee Morgan's best ?
« on: 21 Oct 2010, 07:28 pm »
So I've been listening to Blue Train, and falling in love with trumpeter Lee Morgan's work on it.

What other Lee Morgan work do folks like?

I like it all but the classic is Cornbread. Ceora is one of those tunes that takes you somewhere nice when you listen to it. And, the Blue Note reissue recording is just a straight a to d transfer with no tweaking - sounds great.

Folks often recommend Cornbread and Sidewinder, but for me I think Search For The New Land is a classic. Especially the title cut, Search For The New Land ... 15 minutes of bliss. I love tunes that take you on a trip, and this one is a wonderful journey. Supported by Wayne Shorter, Grant Green, and Herbie Hancock ... wow!

+1 on Rockadanny's recommendation of "Search For The New Land".  Just plain excellent.  I also enjoy "The Procrastinator" and "Live At The Lighthouse".  Lee Morgan (in his classic period) really seems to like taking listeners on a journey.....and I, for one, am happy to let him be my tour guide.

The Sidewinder is good too.  And Curtis Fuller is great on Blue Train also.  Why no jazz circle?  If you start one I'll post some hard bop selections for sure.

Wow, didn't expect responses so quickly, looks like I have to track down 'Search For The New Land' and 'Cornbread' for starters. Googled 'Sidewinder', it looks promising as well.

I'd start the circle, but think it a bit presumptious for a jazz noob to do so.

Still, if time rolls by w/o one, I may just follow Tyson's lead in the Classical circle and put up a list of selections for Jazz beginners as a sticky, and let the discussion begin.

Indeed - Search For The New Land is just outstanding. What a line up. I have Sidewinder as well. You can't go wrong with any of these classics.

Jazz is music too, why not just start the thread in the Music Circle, and should it garner some pedigree you can lobby to make it a sticky.
Breaking music up into little bits and assigning labels, sort of defeats the quest to introduce people to new sounds/genres. World music, Jazz, classical, rock, pop, folk, experimental, ambient/house/chill/etc...having a circle for each, would be like gated communities, a curious soul may not venture past the gate(s), stymying discovery...IMHO.

Well well well. Lee Morgan must be my favorite trumpeteer because I have 14 of his albums amongs my collection. Out of them all, I must say, Leeway is my favorite. Only 4 tracks, yet none are skippable. "These are soulful days" is timeless for me. Honorable mentions to The Procrastinator and Search For the New Land.

His contributions on Jimmy Smith's House Party are pretty sweet as well.

The tapes for Top Cat (Blue Note) stayed in the locker for forty years- can't imagine why- then Michael Cuscana got a hold of them and released it.  With Jackie McLean, Curtis Fuller, McCoy Tyner, Bob Crenshaw and Art Blakey.  I like it a whole hellofa lot.

Thanks Wolf-boy.

I had the Turrentine album in my hand yesterday at DD, noticed Lee on the credits, but put it down as the condition was tough.

FYI - I really like Lee on Art Blakey's release, "Paris Jam Session". A terrific recording with Art, Bud Powell, Wayne Shorter, and Lee.  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I almost hate to mention this because it's out of print, but there's a Mosaic 6-CD set called The Complete Vee Jay Lee Morgan & Wayne Shorter Sessions.  There's some really smokin' material on there.  To me, Lee and Wayne tend to cancel out each other's idiosyncrasies in a sort of Lennon/McCartney-like way.  There's no annoyingly funky stuff like Lee's famous track The Sidewinder, and Wayne does not get "way out" as he sometimes tends to do.  It's all straight ahead stuff.  Well worth it if you can find it at a reasonable price.

My favorites are No Room for Squares, Procrastinator, Take Twelve, Delightfulee, Blakey's Moanin and The Witch Doctor. These contain some of his best solos.
