how to safely connect two preamps to same amp?
« on: 6 Sep 2010, 03:40 pm »
Hi All.
I've a stereo tube preamp and HT preamp (NuForce AVP16). My tube preamp does not have a HT bypass. How do I hook it up to switch between these two preamps?
Two options I'm considering are:
1) Use a switcher (Zektor MAS 7.1). However, this does not seem to be available new/used!
2) Connect the tube preamp to the TAPE or AUX input of HT preamp. Use the HT preamp as the master volume control. Is this safe?
Any other better options?
Thanks!

Those are pretty much your options.  Since you are using a tube preamp in addition to an HT preamp, you are obviously doing so for the purity of sound and/or for the tube sound for 2 channel listening.  I wouldn't feed the tube preamp into the HT preamp circuitry and additional volume control if I had the option of using a switcher.

A reasonably priced switcher is the Inday AV4X-R for $129.  It uses a 12VDC external power supply, but that is only for the remote control and display, the switching circuitry is passive.

If the NuForce has a "tape monitor" you can run the tube pre into that and bypass the Nuforce volume control.  The tape in would basically operate like a bypass.  You could actually do the same if the Nuforce offers multichannel analog inputs just use the two main inputs.
